Great Text / Lousy Illustrations
on 9 June 2014
This book had the potential to be a little classic, had the graphic illustrations matched the quality of the pen sketches of each pub. Instead the book is littered with third rate illustrations, frequently repeated ad nauseam for page after page. This is extremely lazy editing and a meaningless page filler, as the rudimentary illustrations do nothing to enhance the images created by the text. How difficult would it really have been to send out a decent photographer and capture some atmospheric pictures of each pub, inside and out? I've almost finished reading through the book and enjoyed most of the pub entries very much indeed, despite the constant irritation of the trite illustrations. A great opportunity missed, I fear.
