Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

London, England spans the entire career of the instrumental ensemble Corduroy, who phoenixed from the embers of art school glamsters Boys Wonder in 1992 and immediately signed to Acid Jazz, their spiritual home. A postmodern Booker T & The MG's, Corduroy's brand of Hammond grooves, a Bacharach-inspired easy vibe and funky film themes, possessed a playful groove that avoided the studious, chin-stroking elements of much of the Acid Jazz crew. Tracks like "Skirt Alert", "E-type", "Harry Palmer" and "High Havoc" exemplify this swinging, organ-propelled approach. In an attempt to crossover commercially, the band opted, perhaps somewhat predictably, to ditch instrumentals and make their next three albums song-based. While the transition was successful, culminating in jazzy pop crowned with swirling West Coast harmonies and tight rhythms, the anticipated commercial breakthrough never really materialised. A great pity too, as any band that records a rump shaking, acid jazz version of Motorhead's dandruff-dislodging anthem "Motorhead" deserves to sell a million. --Chris King

4.0 out of 5 stars I DO need your wah-wah., 23 Oct 2001

90's acid jazz masters, Corduroy are something of an aquired taste, but they're well worth getting to know. An eceletic mix of organs, guitars and the occasional sample, Corduroy are at their best when they throw in some of their, (slightly Beatles-esque), vocal harmonies. This complitation contains a terrifying amount of tracks spread over 2 CDs, all of which are quite enjoyable, but the sheer scale means that not all are tip-top quality. Still, it's a lot of listening for a little cash. Splash out, get funky with Corduroy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a MODernist classic defined, 27 Feb 2004
This review is from: London England (Audio CD)
This album represents excellent value for your pounds!!If you like Booker T you will definately like this as a fair portion of the album is devoted to hammond based instrumentals, though, there is a definite 90's feel to the dealings as the production is far better than you average Booker T offering.
The album is never let down by filler and will manage to hold your attention throughout the prolonged playing time.Despite a strong cult following it is a pity that Corudroy never broke through to make it to the big time but I really can't recommend them strongly enough, you will be thoughrouly entertained by this- yet another Speedy Vespa Classic........Light entertainment at its best that you will enjoy listening to or maybe your pals will enjoy as first class background music!

5.0 out of 5 stars The only party CD you'll ever need: Deliriously Funky!, 7 July 2010

OK, so maybe not the `only' party CD you'll ever need (though it comes close) but possibly the only Acid Jazz CD you'll ever need (if you really, REALLY had to choose only one). This double CD is rammed with all their best tunes and there's very little by way of any filler. Unashamedly retro it may be but these incredibly funky grooves are almost impossible not to move to. Anyone browsing this CD will have a good idea about what to expect here but for the benefit of those that don't 'Acid Jazz' was a label and genre of a style of music that had a largish but still relatively underground period of popularity in the 90's. Characterised by the wholesale lifting/emulation of the jazz, funk and film-score music of the 60's and 70's it was given a modern twist and a revival was born. Having quite a few Acid Jazz albums I can confidently say that although there were bigger bands that emerged from the scene (for example The Brand New Heavies) no one did it better than Corduroy. Perhaps this maybe had something to do with the fact that they were - at least initially - almost exclusively an instrumental outfit and were not therefore encumbered by an iffy vocalist: they simply let their instruments do the talking (in a similar vein to The James Taylor Quartet: only better). This compilation is almost relentlessly groovy but nonetheless still demonstrates a range of mood; from seedy 'Huggy Bear'-type funk to bossa-nova beats and swing. Furthermore what separated Corduroy from the rest of the (sometimes somewhat po-faced) Acid Jazz pack was a palpable sense of fun that is evident throughout: these guys clearly didn't take themselves too seriously. In short this is a deliriously funky collection of tunes that would be the perfect accompaniment to a pretty cool wing-ding, or perhaps simply cruising around the twisting roads of Monaco in your E-type on your way to a hip cocktail party. Evocative and joyful: it'll put a big dumb - but somehow still cool - smile on your face.Enjoy!
