Product Description

Album Description

This wildly ambitious project is culmination of a long held dream by Hans Koller to record with the great American saxophonist Steve Lacy. The album was recorded shortly before Steve's untimely death and will be remembered as the last studio recording by one of the giants of contemporary music. The album is also the first time, since his collaborations with Gil Evans, that Steve Lacy recorded with a large ensemble.

Hans Koller has been making a name for himself as one of the finest composers and arrangers currently working in Europe. A measure of the esteem in which he is held can be seen by the musicians he has assembled for this project - including the sensational Hamburg based trumpeter Claus Stotter. The band also features some of the most exciting players on the UK scene, including drummer Gene Calderazzo, guitarist Phil Robson, saxophonist Julian Siegal and veteran trumpet master Henry Lowther.

Personnel:
Steve Lacy - (soprano sax), Hans Koller - (fender rhodes), Claus Stotter - (trumpet), Phil Robson - (guitar), Gene Calderazzo - (drums), Dave Whitfield - (bass)

With: Melinda Maxwell - (engish horn), Mike Williams - (alto sax), Julian Siegel - (tenor sax, clarinet), Mark Hanslip - (tenor sax), Dave Blackmore - (baritone and bass clarinet), Tom Rees Roberts - (trumpet), Henry Lowther, Dave Priseman, Alex Bonney - (trumpet and flugelhorn), Jim Rattigan - (French horn), Jeremy Price, Mark Bassey - (trombone), Sarah Wiliams - (bass trombone)

London Ear is the baddest composing and arranging i've heard in ages. steve lacy makes the hair on my neck do all kinds of crazy sutff. killing rhythm section aswell, but i thought personally a little more of the man himself wouldn't be a bad thing. I really like 'Blinks' and i think mike williams on 'Home' is pretty amazing also. The arrangement of Filles de Kilimanjaro is a brilliant idea that works extremely well, some ridiculous solos in that one as well. definately worth checking out.

Just a word or three to add - yes, indeed, mmhmmmnn! I caught the Hans Koller big band at the new Vortex during the London jazz festival last year and they were fantastic. This is a wonderful recording full of sultry, strident voicings and intricate, angular lines with shedloads of soul and it swings too! Steve Lacey's playing is a dream and framed perfectly within the core sextet. Check out his last big band recording too - New Memories. The don.
