Review This collection may not be the first Etienne compilation, but with 35 tracks from their 18 years of existence, it pulls together all the singles along with choice EP and album tracks. It's a wonderful distillation of a career brimming with fantastic moments. With disc one telling the chart action end of their story - all the hits, with a pair of new tracks attached, such as the bracing Xenomania team-up of Burnt Out Car and This Is Tomorrow, in which they could be saying cheerio to us for good - disc two adds further less-chart-bothering singles and cast adrift at the end is their sublime festive favourite, I Was Born On Christmas Day.
Of course, fans may quibble at some ommissions, but seeing as Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs know their way around a retrospective - they compiled the immensely marvellous Glen Campbell Capitol Years set, as well as reactivating lost classics such as The Peddlers - we should just leave it to them.
The debut single was a very of-its-time-version of Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart, slipping in nicely with the times of loose trousers, and the full length remix is still one of Andrew Weatherall's finest moments. From there we journey through electro folk (Like A Motorway, How We Used To Live), euro house (He's On The Phone, Pale Movie) and chandelier symphonies (Avenue, Hobart Paving). They've turned their hand to almost anything. Sequenced as it is, London Conversations is a joyous musical adventure through the greatest place on Earth.
They may have not sold millions or filled major stadiums, they may not have hung out with Bono or had a very public crack-based meltdown, but, and probably because of all that, Saint Etienne remain very special indeed. Some sort of national treasurehood awaits. --Ian Wade

The mastering on this compilation is very well done. This has injected new life into the tracks. All in all an essential purchase for any fan. It's also a darn site more interesting and varied than a lot of the acts who end up in the charts today (lame hip-hop tracks / cheap X-Factor pop divas & wannabes / boring and indistinctive guitar bands). When is innovation and effort going to be represented in the mainstream media again? Variety is the spice of life, after all. Whatever your opinion on this particular band, you certainly can't accuse them of lacking ideas or refusing to take a risk.

Far too many gorgeous inspired tracks to comment on , i never tire of hearing these songs even though i already own most of them , its a nice well chosen compilation in one handy package , the music is a total delight , i always get the feeling saint etienne regard music as a sacred force ,always flowing harmoniously with each inspired idea , never controlling or trying to be smart which is why they do what they do so well , as always music at its best .... opt for the dvd version ,two audio cd's and a great dvd very nicely and carefully put together , loads to read when you are listening to the music , just as it should be , great value for money ...

Whoever is responsible for releasing this, let me give you a big "thank you." As a fan St.E, I have all the CDs, several CD singles, the remix album: Casino classics, and at least one "best of" compilation. However, up until the point I ordered this wonderfully priced gem, I didn't have one video from my favorite pop band. As an added bonus, I (a yankee) can play the DVD on my region 1 player.
