Review

'A beguiling page-turner' --Good Book Guide

'A gripping, stylish narrative that helps reclaim the "cosy" murder mystery by consciously including the more uncomfortable aspects of society that it has always embodied under the surface' --Dundee University Review of the Arts

'We loved the first in this post WW2 series, Brighton Belle, and the second adventure is even better' --Lovereading

5.0 out of 5 stars London Calling 27 Mar 2013
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mirabelle Bevan and Vesta Churchill run a debt recovery agency in nineteen fifties Brighton. When a friend of Vesta's, Lindon Claremont, turns up on their doorstep asking for help both Mirabelle and Vesta find themselves involved in a more complex case than they had bargained for.

Lindon seems to be the last person who saw Rose Bellamy Gore before she disappeared outside a seedy jazz club in London and he is wanted for questioning by the police. Mirabelle and Vesta encourage him to go to the police but things don't work out as expected and both girls travel to London and start asking questions which might put them both in danger.

If you enjoyed this author's `Brighton Belle' then you will love this second book in the series. Life in the nineteen fifties is vividly described and the difference in attitudes between then and now is very clear to modern readers. I like both the main characters and think they are developing in interesting ways. I like the aura of secrecy which surrounds Mirabelle's previous life and the way the author introduces scraps of information about it every now and then.

The book is well plotted and includes some very murky aspects of human nature and of crime but there is little on the page violence and no bad language. This series shows how compelling mysteries can be written without bad language, excessive violence or gratuitous sex. In fact the books are all the better for their lack of these ingredients.

3.0 out of 5 stars A likeable heroine 16 April 2013
Format:Hardcover
Mirabelle returns, though unwillingly at first. It's nice to have a likeable, intelligent, female lead, and this is an interesting mystery for her to get her tenacious teeth into. Sidekick Vesta's childhood friend is accused of murder and the two women set out to prove his innocence. The Soho scenery, jazz background and characters are credible and the adventure swings quickly and gently along. An uncomplicated, enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars London calling? - yes indeed! 17 May 2013
By Johan Wood VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Having just got through two hundred and seventy odd pages - this is a proof edition by the way - I found it very well plotted and being born shortly before the era of this story, it has a kind of ring about with attention to the detail. The basics of the plot relate to two ladies who run a debt recovery firm in the early nineteen fifties in Brighton - made a change from the usual `tup North' but the book's title gives the plot away slightly as London does get a look in as the story unfolds! - and then a friend turns up asking for help on their doorstep about somebody who has gone missing outside a jazz club in London and then found to be wanted for questioning by the police that our ladies then trail off to London in search of what has happened and this makes a slight diversion from their `day to day' job of sorts.

This would make a delightful film ( even a television version would be acceptable I feel sure but BBC as opposed to ITV and it's variants as the tedious advert breaks every ten or so minutes destroy any enjoyment these days in anything that is deemed watchable ) as all the ingredients are there and the plot line is wonderfully crafted and I felt really involved in the way it went from the first few pages and the attention to detail was quite something along the way until the last pages and I can say I really enjoyed this well worth read. Bottom line is that even if you are not of a 'certain age', you will enjoy it.
