* For those who grew up on a musical diet of London-American releases - and also for those who simply enjoy great 20th century American music - Ace debuts the first of a series of at least 15 year-by-year overviews of the legendary black and silver (and, before that, black and gold) label - starting with one of its halcyon years, 1960.
* Tracks for the series have been carefully chosen to reflect the diversity of its output, and concentrating on recordings that do not appear on other Ace compilations.
* All tracks are presented in glorious mono - the way that you first heard and bought them on London at the time of their release. Ace have also used - wherever possible - the original London tapes for authenticity.
* Many countries apart from the UK had a London American label - for example Canada and Australia. Thus this series has international appeal too.
* Most tracks were US or UK hits. The rest are such a familiar part of the DNA of American music that they feel as though they were anyway.

Oh! What joy. At long last.,

I'm really looking forward to these releases and I do hope Ace go back from 1960 as well as forward. I'm sure I can recall, not long after CD's were introduced, seeing a previous set of such London American label issues and I've always regretted not buying them at the time. This time I will not be so foolish, especially as these are on ACE so we can look forward to their very high standard of production as well.
I also have empathy with "Redbeard", specifically his comments on B sides. I too purchased all of my early singles with the proceeds from my paper round and spent most of it on Saturday mornings after being paid; three records for a pound. What a bargain and a great deal of these records I bought were on the London American label and bought as a result of hearing a few snippets on Tony Hall's programme on Radio Luxembourg. When I got home, I probably played the B sides as often as the A sides and getting equal enjoyment from both, with some exceptions of course. Therefore, I do believe issues of this kind would benefit from the inclusion of both sides of the record; it was a total package as far as I'm concerned. Finally, I understand ACE are not going to include sides which have appeared on other of their issues. That's a shame as, although I have many of these recordings on various other CD's like many others no doubt, it would be extremely enjoyable to hear them all from the same year packaged together. However, I'm sure I won't be disappointed regardless.

My first London and looks like not the last.,

My first London recording was Little Richard singing "Keep On Knocking" and from then on London dominated my singles and LPs (Duane Eddy).
Looking at my singles now, nicely stacked up, Decca, Pye, Colombia, and Philips, London dominates in quantity with the blue and white sleeves, sometimes just plain old brown. Little Richard actually autographed a London sleeve for me with "Good Golly, Miss Molly" inside, I think he appreciated that this was not just a table napkin. I am looking forward to the quality of the CDs, hoping they may sound like they did way back being played on my one speaker record player. Let them "roll". Roger

The Ace Label - So aptly named,

This review is from: The London American Label Year By Year 1960 (Audio CD)
It never ceases to amaze me how Ace keep coming up with so many different permutations to provide us with the hits of the 50's and 60's. And this item will appeal to the many lovers of music from this era, I have purchased some 50 or so cd's from the Ace label, every one of them an absolute gem. They cannot be bettered for sound quality, information in minute detail on all of the tracks, this is so vital to me, unlike some companies who can just about give you a track listing. Not to mention pictures of the artistes featured. Anyway, back to this cd, to the average listener, most of the tracks will probably be unknown, and when purchasing a cd like this, these are the ones I listen to first. There are some familiar tracks, and also some familiar names with unknown tracks, like the track by Lee Hazlewood and Duane Eddy & His Orchestra, an amazing track by a girl group called The Delicates, which surprisingly wasn't even a US hit. Knowing how many singles were released on the London label, it wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't a second volume of most of the years, how about it Ace??. Can't wait for other years in the series to come, finally, marks out of 10?, I'd give it 37, it's that good.
