Product Description

The Independent

"Alastair Sawday, the authority on special places to stay."

Product Description

This is an unusual guide to London. With excellent maps, colour photos, witty & informative write-ups and lots of information, it is a great addition to the much-loved "Special Places to Stay" series. All the entries we have selected for the book exude style, conviviality and value for money. Our approach is unusual. There are no set rules, no interminable checklists and no hard and fast criteria for inclusion. We look for what we like, we celebrate the unusual, the beautiful and the individual. We applaud the small hoteliers and B&B owners who show unstinting kindness and generosity.

4.0 out of 5 stars London, 28 Jun 2002
By A Customer
I read the introduction from Alastair Sawday's book and at once I knew this was the guide I needed. It's a funny, friendly, full of great tips. It's almost as if you are being recommended little known places and interesting tit bits on the city by a trusted friend. My boyfriend and I stayed at one of the hotels, it was one of very cheap ones, but we didn't want to pay much because we were going to a very expensive concert.
Anyway it was really good value, really central (Russell Sq) and had a very upbeat feel. Other places in the book look really homely, or very elegant and so we need to find another excuse to go up to London soon, so we can try some more out.

5.0 out of 5 stars How refreshing!, 28 Jun 2002

Such a great mixture of places, including many reasonably priced B&Bs which you would otherwise never know about. The maps and colour photos are superb and there's loads of information about London and quick reference indices to help you choose where to stay.

I've already made a booking for a business trip (and need home cooked food and real coffee which I never find in chain hotels). I found the B&B owner really helpful but if you've used any of the other Special Places books, that won't come as a surprise. Find an excuse to go to London and check out these hidden treasures!
