Amazon.co.uk Review

Finally, belatedly released (some 12 years after the fact), this live album finds one of the UK's most elusive and enigmatic bands in concert--at the Hammersmith Odeon, no less--and perhaps the most surprising thing is how normal it all sounds, right down to the audience hand clapping along with "Does Caroline Know". The cloistered intensity of their later work--the extraordinary Colour Spring and Laughing Stock albums--was still to come, and this release finds the group poised between the smart-pop of their early singles ("It's My Life", "Such A Shame") and the meditative song-sketches that would follow. Certainly, they lose nothing in the shift from studio to stage: Mark Hollis's voice is as beautifully anguished (and as assured) as ever; while the combination of Rupert Black's piano and David Rhodes's corrosive guitar, lends an unexpected bite to "Life's What You Make It" and "Living In Another World". Intriguingly, the liner notes hint at the existence of a concert film, apparently directed by one Noel Oliver; fans can only wait, and hope, that it sees the light of day. --Andrew McGuire

This is the sound of Talk Talk live. Critics have said that it's how the songs should be heard. The versions on this album are fuller than you'll find on the studio recordings.

The musicianship of the band shines through. THE highlight has got to be, "Renee". Brought to life, this song is a tour de force - Mark Hollis's vocal is stunning, it really is.

If you know Talk Talk, you'll know them a hell of a lot better after listening to this.

This great live album is sadly impaired by the fact that it is limited to only eight songs. There is indeed a film of this show, anyone who has seen the "Talk Talk: Natural History" video will have seen the footage of "Give it Up". The concert was recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1986 on the tour to promote "The Colour of Spring" album. The encore, not included here, was "The Party's Over"!!! This was the last time the group ever toured, as their two final albums "Spirit of Eden" (1988) and "Laughing Stock" were too freeform in nature to be recreated onstage. This is, so far, the only official live Talk Talk album, and it was a classic show. But we know there is far more of it than is featured here, and, as has consistently been the case with EMI's Talk Talk compilations (with the exception of "Natural History"), the album is too much of a half measure for the die hard fans, who would be much happier with the bootleg versions. EMI would, of course, instantly redeem themselves if they saw fit to release the film!

I was there, back in 86 in the best seats of the house. They were fantastic and this album proves why. I have seen the respective video of the concerts and it is a shame that not all of the songs from the video are on the album, but never the less, this is well worth getting if you have the chance. If you love talk talk music, then you'll love this.
