Lon Chaney is mesmerizing..., 4 May 2005
This review is from: Lon Chaney Collection [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This DVD set is simply brilliant! I watch it all the time. Lon Chaney is by far the best actor I have ever seen. He just holds you, keeps you there, fascinated by him. I have never seen anyone so amazing on the screen as him and he was mostly a silent screen actor apart from one talking film called "The Unholy Three", which sadly has not yet been released and it is also brilliant! The two best movies on this set are "Laugh Clown Laugh" and "The Unknown". Michael F. Blake's commentary's and documentary are excellent giving us an insight into how the movies were made and a little information about Lon Chaney the man. I also really enjoyed watching the composer's contest winner's documentary. I think they did a remarkable job composing the music for these movies. This is such a treat for any movie enthusiast. I'm so proud to own this and other Lon Chaney films. To me they are priceless.

For all lovers of gore and cinematographic atmosphere, 5 Dec 2003
This review is from: Lon Chaney Collection [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Lon Chaney was but a name to me, when I first watched this luxurious double-DVD, and already he feels quite familiar to me. Not enough praise can be lavished on TCM's initiative, the restored films are pristine and gorgeous to look at, the newly commissioned scores are idiomatic, melodic and challenging in a way that doesn't distract you from the actual films, and the long documentary offers fascinating angles at Hollywood and the gore of the 20's. Of the films, 'Laugh, Clown, Laugh' is an underrated gem, very similar, and quite superior, to Chaplin's 'Limelight', with climaxes I'm not liable to ever forget again - a true classic. The grotesque, incredibly morbid and outrageously un-PC 'Unknown' is ... well, sort of hard to take, but one is spellbound for its one hour duration. For the price of those two, for the documentary and for the knowledgeable commentaries that follow each of the three films, I can only recommend any lover of silent films or melodrama or cinematic atmosphere to purchase this set.

Lon Chaney was one of the most memorable actors of the silent era. This is a good collection. The picture quality is mostly good (except for Ace of Hearts which needs digital reworking). The extras include a bio on Chaney which is quite interesting. I am still waiting for the Unholy Three (1930) to be released.
