I really tried so hard to love this book, honestly I did guys. I was expecting the book to have loveable characters, funny dialogue and lots of romance based on my experience with Anna and the French Kiss. I thought I would love the book just like I did with Anna. I kept reading hoping it would improve and hoping that I would like it eventually, but it didn't happen.

Whereas Anna was so likeable and relatable, Lola was just so...annoying and just hard to picture as a character. I understand that the author wanted to show how different and unique Lola was and hightlight that she had a quirky fashion sense BUT there was way too much focus on it. Her outfits started to get so crazy and ridiculous, it eventually came to the point that I really didn't care about her silly outfits or anything and got frustrated when there was so much attention on it. Clothes do not define a person and I feel like I didn't really understand Lola's mind track or WHY she loves dressing in her strange and out-there way. If it was explained in a rational way as to WHY she dressed in costumes maybe I would've liked her more and maybe could've understood her. Halfway through the book, I realised that I knew NOTHING about Lola's personality. I knew that Anna was an awkward teenage girl with a big heart, but Lola? All I knew about her was that she wore strange clothes and was just a complainer.

For me theres one thing that I can't stand, whiners. People who constantly complain and for me that's what Lola kept doing the whole time. To love a book, I have to love the main character. But this main character just made me irritated the whole time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't know how she does it 7 Sept. 2012
Format:Hardcover
You know how millions of people read Mills & Boon? Stephanie Perkins is like Mills & Boon for the YA generation. I know that sounds bad, but it's a really, really good thing. Personally, I think Mills & Boon are terrible - Stephanie Perkins is doing romance right. I don't know how she does it, but she manages to perfectly recreate - with all the agony, longing, sweetness and passion - the sensations of first love. I'm 29 and married, and reading this still made my stomach flip, gave me butterflies, and had me practically swooning (if people still do that). More than 'just' a romance book though, this is a fantastic YA novel in its own right.

The pacing is perfect, the characters so full-bodied and identifiable, the dialogue utterly convincing...basically I wish I could trap Stephanie Perkins in my basement and make her write a book a day. (I'm not going to, as I respect her freedom - and the law - plus I don't have a basement.)

After falling utterly in love with Anna and the French Kiss I admit I was a bit worried that this book wouldn't reach the same heights, but it did. Now I can't wait until her next one!

(I love that Anna and Etienne are in this too!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Stephanie Perkins is magic 28 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely loved this book. Much like Rainbow Rowell, Stephanie Perkins' writing just does something to me. It makes me feel comforted and calm - which sounds weird, I know.

Lola and the Boy Next Door is the second in a three-book companion novel series which starts with Anna and the French Kiss. You don't have to read them in order, but each book references the last, so you'll feel more involved if you read them in order. Lola is a young girl living with her two dads in San Francisco, wearing lavish costumes and spending time her best friend Lindsay and her boyfriend Max. Right from the very start of the book, we find out that Lola has some new neighbors, but she prays it's not the same ones from her past moving back to the neighborhood.

I connected with this book a lot, Lola's situation in particular, which would be a spoiler to discuss. Lola was a lovely character, who developed throughout. The book is mostly about the plot and the relationship between several characters, but it's also about Lola finding herself and discovering that her lavish outfits she likes to wear isn't something to hide herself behind, it is herself. Two characters - Anna and St. Clair - from the first book appear regularly within this book but as I said earlier, you don't need to have read the first one to understand what's going on, it's just an added bonus.

The book was so enjoyable to read and the characters were loveable. I think I prefer Anna slightly more, as it contains more of the things I love (such as film, Paris, etc), but it's still a very good book and I recommend you read the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just lovely. 24 Mar. 2013

Lola and the boy next door is a gorgeous and sweet romantic tale that has you hooked from the first paragraph.
I loved this book as much, if not more, than Anna and the French Kiss and of course it was good to see Anna and St. Clair feature here as well.
I think what I loved most about this book is the character descriptions. Both Lola and Cricket are wonderfully likeable in their own quirky way, and I like that they are not the normal, predictable characters that you can sometimes read about in romance books.
I would highly recommend Lola and The Boy Next Door - a wonderful, unputdownable read.
