I picked up the Loire Valley guide wanting to get an insight into the region - it's newly published so bang up to date which is a major plus. I really like the format, it starts with short regional overview sections, from History to Eating & Drinking giving you a great feel for the region before you dive into the detail for the different areas.
Each area of the Loire valley is described in depth, well researched and accompanied by some stunning photography. Not only do you learn the history and geography but the listings mean that you can really plan where you go and what you do. Also included are lots of maps so you shouldn't get lost!
This is highly recommended to anyone heading to the Loire - it's compact size means that you can easily pack it into your lowcost hand baggage! I'm certainly taking mine with me when I go.

As we live in the area this book seemed like a great choice for checking out where to go and what to see! (both for us and for visitors!) The information is great, detailed and interesting! BUT, and it is a BIG but, it really needs better maps! The book is divided into eight chapters. Three of those are background information; The remaining five chapters divide the Loire into manageable chunks. But there is only ONE map at the beginning of the book, which covers the whole area of the Loire Valley. Frankly in order to make this book really useful, and easy to use, there ought to be at least a map for each chapter, so that the various places featured can be located!
So - LOVE the information provided BUT really needs more maps!!
