4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring 10 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
Just started reading through this after buying it the other day. Visually stunning and beautifully designed, this book makes an excellent addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in form, structure and usage of type and lettering.
As a designer myself, I can see that this is one of those books that will be returned to again and again. The writer has a slightly snobbish pride in his craft but, if you are a beginner, don't let him put you off.

The author uses lovely illustrations and a dry sense of humour to convey helpful information about the process of creating your own logos and fonts. The book is roughly divided into those two sections, with the former on logos containing a variety of types of logos -- perfect as a resource of ideas.

The section on fonts was less helpful to me, only because it goes into a very fine level of detail about the exact angles, widths, lengths and so on of each letter in a given font. As I'm not particularly interested in designing fonts for anything other than specific website projects, I don't need the level of expertise he clearly has.

Overall, well worth buying if you're a web or graphic designer.

5.0 out of 5 stars An introduction to letter making 29 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
An invitation to look at type for it's own sake. It reads like a novel and is endlessly inspiring even if the technical aspects are now a bit dated. I love this book!
