5.0 out of 5 stars Put all your other remotes away in a drawer, 30 Jan 2006
This review is from: Logitech Harmony 885 Advanced Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
I've been using my Harmony 885 remote for 3 months and can honestly say I am glad I invested in it (Alright I didn't buy mine from Amazon and if you search the net you can find it for quite alot £ less).

We used to have 7 remotes sitting on top of the TV (yes 7!!), now there is only 1. The harmony 885 is used to control: TV, VCR, DVD, Sky+, Freeview PVR and a Hi-Fi with no problems.

I use the activity function to switch on multiple things, i.e. the "watch TV" activity switches on the TV, sky+ box and speakers and puts everything to the correct imputs.

It does take some time to set up properly - you can use wizards that guide you through step by step through the process of adding your equipment. TIP: make sure that you know the model codes before you start, it will make things much easier. The equipment we have is all fairly new, so I can't comment on how easy it is to add older equipment, however I have read that if you contact support they will add models and equipment that isn't listed.

The website connections and uploading my settings hasn't been an issue for me, so I can't comment on the problems mentioned by the reviewer below. As with many websites I guess it is all down to time of day that you attempt to do the setup.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent...but it takes time to get it right, 3 Sep 2006
This review is from: Logitech Harmony 885 Advanced Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
I had 5 remotes for various devices. Some overlapped in functionality some only did one thing. I wanted a single programmable replacement. I started with a cheaper Strand device and within 10 minutes realised that wasn't going to work. I checked reviews and managed to get a hold of the Harmony 885. I was impressed by the size and shape. The buttons can be a little small and feel cose together but that just means I have to be careful when using it. The screen is nice and big, the soft buttons are neat if close together. All in all a great device.

So how well does it work...? In a word - Great! It has easily replace all of my other remotes and I quickly got used to the device.

So what about the downsides....

You have to program this device via a PC. This means that you have a lot of flexibility with regards to the control software but it's also very daunting..after all this is is just a remote control right(?)

The software is a bit hit and miss - you really need to set aside some time to properly understand it and configure your remote. I managed my first set up in about 20 minutes. That gave me around 55% of what I wanted automatically. That time included me configuring disconnecting, running downsides to check I hadn't broken it and then returning to my PC...

For the most part the software is good once you get used to what it's trying to do. USB is the only connection option and for the most part that should mean few if any connection problems.

The remote learns from other IR devices but I found that this pulled in all manner of weird and meaningless codes that no doubt mean a lot to the remote and the devices that they control but mean a lot less to mere mortals.

It's possible to combine commands on a single key stroke although the software doesn't make this very clear. This is different to the ability to trigger events of sequences of events on entering or leaving Activities. Activities are things like "Watching DVDs" or "Listening to music". You can create as manay Activities as you want. This is a major plus!!

My experience of support has been very good although it's limited to email as fair as I was concerned.

It's not perfect - the software could do with some better usability and functionality tweaks but overall I can heartily recommend it so long as you put the time in to makeit do what you want.

3.0 out of 5 stars A frustrating combination of great product and lousy support, 30 Dec 2005
This review is from: Logitech Harmony 885 Advanced Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
Make no mistake, this remote is a lovely piece of kit. Great ergonomics, balances well in the hand, has unique 'activity' based approach (bit like a clever version of the home cinema zoned setting on the old One4All multi's) and that colour screen with 8 assignable soft keys per 'page'.

When it works it's great....the problem comes in getting to the working stage. Updating and programming is ONLY available via a web based interface over your internet connection to Logitech servers. Depending on how heavy the traffic is you may have to make several attempts at connecting, let alone going through the whole procedure. logitech themselves must be aware of this as 'saves' are offered along the way, just in case...

The final blow comes somewhat unexpectedly - you may have found the exact make and model number of your device, which the site will confirm and then upload the control codes to the remote, but you may well then find, as I did, that you've been handed a bundle of generic codes relating to all variants of that manufacturers product type! I got 8 pages of soft key controls uploaded fro Toshiba TV - approximately only 10% related to my actual TV features, the rest were for features my TV simply does not have. Still I suppose it covers all bases!

This will leave you in the scenario of having to reassign and rename the keys - remove the 'dead' functions and also, again as in my case, learn missing features from your old remote.

To sumarise, if you have lost or don't have access to your original remotes, this product is not for you. If you have trouble setting the timer on your video, this product is definitely not for you. If you won't something easy to set up and use straight out of the box, this product isn't for you.

BUT if you have good IT skills and are prepared to spend a couple of days setting it up as it should be then you could well be very happy with it.
