So does the new model improve on the old as far as video making goes? Well, yes but not by a lot.
The biggest improvements are the resulting far more natural colours and also (for the people who intend to use Logitech's own software for recording) the onboard HD 1080p 30fps instant processing. The h.264 video compression is a moot point with me; although the end 1080p file is manageably small and of a fine quality, to my eyes it's lost enough definition in the processing to make you doubt its HD status - it's good but certainly not amazing. Personally I use VirtualDub to video-capture at 720p uncompressed (yes - the C920 does work with VirtualDub - I had my doubts!). The end file is of course enormous but the quality is notably superior to Logitech's own 1080p rendition.
The onboard mics do a good job for their size and although Logitech's software allows for external mics to be selected; strangely it does not recognise a pure Stereo signal entering via a USB port and so only produces audio in Mono. To record in Stereo I use an external pair of matching mics attached to the PC via a USB Audio Interface; both video and audio are captured by the free VirtualDub software.
Logitech's own recording software is mildly annoying (eg the preview screen is too small to make well informed decisions on visual settings) and glitchy (eg the Gain slider bar, when not on Auto, has a life of its own and goes on unrequested walkabouts!), but adequate.
Overall a fine webcam but look elsewhere if you require true HD.
It comes wildly over-packaged in a very nice box that contains just the camera and a manual. The manual is an impressive 143 pages, though the English bit is a less impressive ten pages that just get you through the basics. Most of the useful information about the product is available online, and includes many training videos showing you how to do most tasks. No software is provided in the box. You must download that from the website specified in the manual.
The software offers a range of features that are obvious to use. From the main screen you may do Quick Capture, which is essentially video recording, and Webcam Gallery, which enables you to view and share your videos on Facebook and You Tube, and email them. You may also start motion capture, make a video mask, and so on. There is a "Webcam Controller" button that seemed to do nothing. It is not mentioned in the online help, so I don't know what it is supposed to do.
The main video capture screen provides a good-size preview window, plus a control panel form which you may choose which webcam and microphone to use, zoom and so on. The "Follow my face" and "Effects" features are supported in 360p and 480p, but not in anything higher (720p and 1080p). That's to be expected. The effects give you an instant avatar (such as a dinosaur or alien), which I found more interesting (if not exactly useful) than the video mask feature. Note that video effects are not available for Mac OS.
Sound capture was impressive for voice but not so good for background noises, such as music, for which bass was almost non-existent.
Motion capture is impressive and is easy to set up. On its most sensitive setting, when I pointed it at the street it worked very well, capturing passing pedestrians, scooters, and cars. All videos, no matter how created, are stored in a bar below the capture screen. Click a video to view it and edit it as required.
Video Mask enables you to make an avatar for use during video calls. Unless you are James Bond, I can't imagine why you would need this feature. It works fine and is technically quite impressive but nothing that I would consider using.
Overall then, it's a very nice webcam. The software is useful, barring a few ignorable juvenile features, and the picture quality is terrific.

I think the price is a lot, but I'd not say excessive given the quality of the product. Definitely it is value for money.
I highly recommend it.
(oh, there is a little bit of misleading information, although it is on the box not the review. The product shows how it is top of the range by comparing it to the features of other products in the range. However, when you look at it, it's not comparing it with models that are similar, but the bottom of the range options, so of course it looks amazing by contrast!)
