Your life is busy. You'd love to see far-flung family and friends more often. Yet, there's never enough holiday time or money to go around. Problem solved. With the Logitech Webcam C500 and included Logitech Vid video-calling software, it's fast, free and easy to "be there" in person. The video and sound experience is so true-to-life, it's like being in the same room with the people you care about most. In just one click, you can be there for your grandchild's birthday, the graduate's big day or to open holiday presents together, from across the country or around the world. Thanks to Logitech, high quality video calling is dramatically simplified. So now, there's nothing to keep you from sharing the moments that matter.

Crisp, clear video calling is fast, free and easy.

Perfect for video calling
Video calls have always offered the promise of connection to your distant friends and family. But for many of us, getting the hardware and 3rd party software to work has been a challenge. Isn't it about time for an all-in-one webcam and software solution designed to make video calling easy for everyone? Wait no more. Your Logitech webcam comes with new Logitech Vid, the easiest video-calling application ever. Vid one-click-to-call software works seamlessly, right out of the box, with any new or existing Logitech webcam. So you can just relax and enjoy sharp, clear video conversations without hassles. And it's also free for anyone you call, no matter what webcam they use.

Easy set up
Vid keeps things simple from the start. It's set up when your webcam is. So you're ready to call right away. In fact, you can set up Vid in half the steps it takes with major instant-messaging services. When you make a call, Vid connects you to friends using their email addresses. No screen names, extra accounts to create, or third-party software to download. And Vid works whether you're using a PC or a Mac computer, a stand-alone webcam or a built-in one.

Other free software offers video calling as another hard-to-find feature in a long list of features. Vid presents a simple, intuitive interface where every element is designed to help you make a video call the moment your webcam is ready. Each of your contacts is represented by a thumbnail picture. Simply click the picture of the person you want to contact and Vid starts your video call. Click. Chat. Simple as that.

It's free and that simple.
Vid software is free with your new or existing Logitech webcam. It's also free for everyone you invite to connect with you, regardless of what webcam they have. Want to add a friend to your call list? Simply choose “Add a friend” to send them an email invitation and software link. Once they sign up, you're both set for free one-click calling—no strings attached.

Crystal-clear video chats
All of this simplicity is powered by the Logitech SightSpeed network, a groundbreaking framework designed specifically for video calling. It's also how Logitech Vid can deliver crisp, clear video and audio without compromises or complications. See how real video calling can be with the Logitech Webcam C500 and Vid.

Logitech webcams—a better video calling experience by design
From the moment you make your first video call, you'll see why Logitech is the top choice of webcam users worldwide. Logitech designs every webcam from the ground up to give you dramatically clearer video and sound than other webcams at the same price. It's not just about features like lens quality, sensor resolution and software. It's how the sum of the parts adds up to a better video calling experience for you.

Enjoy a premium video calling experience on Logitech Vid or Skype. With either free service, you can stream your video calls at up to 30 frames per second for an even smoother, more detailed picture than standard video.

RightLight Technology puts you in the perfect light

RightLight2 Technology corrects for
poor light so you look just right
Making a late-night video call from a dimly lit room? The webcam's integrated RightLight technology automatically corrects for poor lighting, so the person you're calling sees you perfectly. No shadows covering your face. No need to adjust the lights. The webcam does all the work, so you can just relax and enjoy the conversation.

RightSound Technology and built-in microphone for clear chats
Trying to carry on a video conversation while your dog is barking outside the door? Chat away. The integrated microphone with RightSound Technology automatically cancels distracting background noises and "voice, voice, voice" echoes. So, your every word is clearly heard. And if you want your video call to be more private, just add a headset.

Logitech Video Effects make video calls entertaining
Add a fun, artistic twist to your video calls with hundreds of special effects. Transform your appearance with animated avatar characters that mimic your facial expressions. Add face accessories like quirky hats and glasses. Or use fun filters to turn your image retro, neon or creepy as a ghost.

Versatile universal clip attaches easily to any notebook or desktop monitor
Do you want a webcam you can use at home and on the road? You got it. The adjustable clip mounts easily and securely to home monitors and mobile notebooks alike. Whether your computer has a flat screen, widescreen or anything in between, this webcam fits it.
Works with all instant messaging programs for hassle-free calling

All you need for video calling is the webcam, a high-speed Internet connection and software with video calling capability. We recommend Logitech Vid video calling software for fast, easy and free face-to-face connections. You can also download other IM programs online. Unlike some brands, Logitech webcams work with all instant messaging programs—yours and whomever you call, so getting connected is hassle-free.

Disclaimer: I've purchased this webcam for the sole purpose of using it on Skype. Therefore I apologise but I cannot comment on its qualities as related to other applications (recording of videos for youtube, VoIP using software other than Skype, etc.)

This Logitech C500 was purchased for my parents: their former webcam, a rather old Logitech Quickcam, would not work on their new computer running Windows 7, so I decided to upgrade. I can confirm this webcam works flawlessly on Windows 7.

I find this bit of kit absolutely phenomenal. In short, this is what I can report:
    a)VERY easy to install
b)VERY easy to set up for Skype
    c)VERY satisfactory picture quality
    d)excellent value for the price
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    Expanding a bit:

    a) & b)
    ---------
I am not sure what some other reviewers mean when they report failures/difficulties in setting it up. My experience is really different: I'm no computer wiz and it took me probably 2 minutes to unpack it, install the software from the CD, plug the webcam in, use it. Notice I DID NOT install Logitech's proprietary VoIP application included in the package (I have Skype for that). A further 2 minutes were required to test it on Skype. (NB all this was done only on Windows 7).

Next step was having my parents learn how to use it. My parents' computer skills are limited to:
    -switching on the computer
    -starting a call on skype
    -stopping a call on skype
    -switching off the computer

Since I left the webcam properly set up on skype for them, and given they were using an old logitech webcam anyways, this required no effort at all, and they were up and running in minutes.
Bottom line, if you plan on using a webcam for similar purposes, be confident this Logitech C500 shouldn't get in the way with setup problems.

    c) Video Quality
I find the final picture delivered on my monitor by this webcam absolutely brilliant. As a term of comparison I use the older Logitech Quickcam I was talking about earlier. This C500 is definitely an improvement. The picture is:
    -Sharper
    -Less noisy
-Better exposed (i.e. no areas of overwhelming brightness or overwhelming darkness)

Please notice I see these improvements while both my internet connection and my parents'connection are exactly the same they were when they had the older logitech webcam: no difference in internet connection/larger bandwidth to be held responsible for the improvements. Skype versions on our two computers also stayed the same.

I also like the fact that the C500 features a wide-angle lens, which means that, at normal viewing distance (webcam placed on the monitor, subject roughly 1m away) I'm able to see 2-3 people down to the torso and some of the room where they're sitting. Moreover, a wide-angle lens means a bigger depth of field: while the C500 does not feature an autofocus lens, its wide angle lens means the range of distances where your subject will appear in focus is actually huge, and your subjects will pretty much stay in focus even if they move back and forth a bit.

The C500 is apparently the cheapest webcam in the logitech line to feature a glass lens and a "RightLight" technology. I'd say these are definitely no marketing features. The webcam continuously adjusts exposure depending on the light conditions in the room, and the effects are surprising, even in the badly-lit room in which my parents' pc is.

All in all I'd say if you're considering one of the cheaper models in the line (C-200, C-300, etc) spend a few pounds more and get this one. It will definitely give you a very enjoyable picture, and you won't have spent a fortune for the most expensive models (I'm thinking of the 9000 pro and similar ones), which probably offer improvements that are of no use if you simply plan on using the webcam for VoIP applications.

    Excellent! 15 Dec 2009
    By Swanny
After two failed Webcams, I bought a more expensive one, which happened to be this one. It was very easy to set up, looks good and has great picture/sound quality. It also comes with useful Logitech Webcam Software, which has some great features. The only problem I had was trying to configure it to Skype, which was suprising difficult to do. However, once I did that it has worked perfectly and is happily sitting on top of my computor screen. I would recommend this product and Logitech is a very good & well trusted make of computor products.

Little cam arrived in good time - got all excited, took it home and took it for a test run. Excellent! It worked fine!

I had Vista on my system at the time which did not like the logitech software - the camera was functioning but the computer didn't know how to use it so it kept blue screening and crashing. So I have whilst I have technically downgraded my laptop to XP, the webcam now works perfectly every single time!

So my recommendation is not to get this webcam to use with Vista, but the webcam is great - the picture clear, the mic excellent and it sits well on laptops and screens.

    Fine camera, software intrusive.
Works fine. Software is somewhat intrusive during Skype calls by always launching a control pad even when you didn't ask it to.
