The top grips the laptop well and there is a rubberised ring around the mouse tray so you can use this at an angle up to 45 degrees (ish). So slim it is the laptop tray of choice (and I've field trialed a fair few).
Just having those few millimeters of tray avoids cooking the bits of you that shouldn't be cooked.

This is essentially a tray for you laptop/netbook
However it does have a rubberised surface to prevent you laptop from slipping and also has a pull out for placing a mouse.
The materials that this is made from does appear to be very sturdy and the lapdesk does have a noticable comforting weighty feel to it.
Only had it a few weeks, was bought for the wife who uses the netbook we have a lot and so wanted something to keep the heat off the legs, does this but remember it will not add any extra cooling.
I guess it will take a max size of a 15inch screen, only have a 11inch netbook and is easily large enough for this.
Does what we wanted and wife is happy :)

It does what is says! I am very happy with my purchase; I would say "Go For It" if you're looking for a simple reasonably cheap lapdesk.
