It is often difficult to imagine how a rather complex subject such as formal logic can be made accessible to those of us who do not hold first degrees in Philosophy. However, this book allows the reader, whether student or not, to pick up the subject at a pace which is suitable for the individual. With well structured chapters and exercises the reader is able to understand the concepts and then apply them in a scientific manner. This may be critised by some as over-simplyfing the subject matter which has itself been studied for many hundreds of years. However Tomassi's approach allows the reader to understand and then apply the science to good use. All in all it can be argued that the book is itself mere logic. (Ps. I Passed)

So close... 5 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
Before I review, let me just state that I own this book, and have a first degree in philosophy, and achieved 1st class awards for all logic and logic related courses. BUT I am NOT saying any of this to boast - the reason I am saying it is if you didn't know better, you might think that was in large part down to this book; mostly, it wasn't.

I've read all the other reviews (5 at press time) for this book and I'd agree with most of what is in there: it's very relaxed in its pace, informal and has nice little interludes with history of logic and issues of previous and contemporary philosophical/logical importance.

The reason I've dropped this otherwise 5 star book by 2 stars is this: the book claims to be suitable for those trying to teach themselves formal logic indeed, a major selling point is that fact it is packed with "student friendly" exercises. The problem is, though it is packed with exercises, it is not very student friendly, and here's why: THERE ARE NO ANSWERS TO ANY OF THE QUESTIONS!

A book claiming to be a good source for self-learning, and to that end is exercise intensive (it is), you would hope - having no one to help you as self-learners often don't - that the book would supply answers in some format. A (very frustrating) shame.

Still the best ...... 21 July 2004

I was lucky enough to be in Paul's logic class at aberdeen, and this book made a tough subject easy. It's clear, concise and very good at explaining the basic concepts involved. In fact, this book is probably suitable for all students of logic up to postgradute level. (ps. I passed too)
