This early disco stuff is what music is all about. The strong drum theme makes it's funky, but as with the early disco stuf, the soul factor is high. As if a Loft collection wouldn't be just super anyway, Mancuso has made supreme groove-ability the prerequisite for inclusion. This is serious stuff and, given a chance, will impress the hell out of your listeners. To reiterate, buy it.
Anoraks out there may want to take the time to find out more about David Mancuso. This guy's take on life, music, happiness and their inter-relatedness is nothing short of inspirational. It'll make you want to quit your job and do something you actually enjoy. For the less spontaneous, buying the CD and pretending your a DJ in 1970's New York will have to suffice.
Hope y'all enjoy it...

I've been clubbing and collecting dance music for 20 years now so, when a compilation is packed with classic tracks, I usually have them already. But this contained a few really thrilling suprises. What a fabulous album! The second CD is more ethereal house and gentle stuff - less interesting really - but the first CD is a load of 20 year old NY dance records, those ones on the cusp between all-out 70s funk and house music - and is absolutely mindblowing. A string of blinding cuts kicks off with track three, Patti Labelle's "The Spirits In It", which is outrageously wild, and rushes you all the way through to Ednah Holt's closing "Serious, Sirius Space Party", which ranks up there with the best space funk records I've ever heard (and I've got a few!). The tracks aren't mixed, but the gaps between them are almost non-existent, which is perfect. The best money I've spent in ages! I'd recommend this unreservedly to anyone into dance music.

If, like me, you had cast a dubious eye on the whole disco craze of the late 70s early 80s, this record will set the - well, record, straight. This album will show you the sheer variety and musical openess of one of the most intersting dance music periods. David Mancuso was the initial DJ really and proves here in his choice of tunes what real underground disco was all about. Absolute stand-out tunes are Patti Labelle's, Manu Dibango's, Risco Connection's and Loose Joint's. All absolute gems.

This record made me want to know more about this period and I can honestly say that blase little me (re)discovered bands and tunes I would never have without this initial cd.

If your into chilled out funky deep house then there can be no other record to buy. Classic 80's remixes blended together to make any modern day deep house fanatic jealous of what David Mancuso put together at the Loft.

A musical journey of classic cuts! 29 Nov. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
In New York's yester-year three DJ's helped shape the sound of New York: Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage, Nicky Siano at The Gallery and David Mancuso at The Loft. Over two CD's, David Mancuso takes you on a journey of the music that moved New York. In the tradition of THE LOFT, you'll find full length versions of classic tunes featuring live instrumentation in all their ruff glory.  Disc 1, labelled, "Early", kicks off with a choon New York radio caned to death, AIN'T NO STOPPIN US NOW.  Thankfully Nuphonic spare us from the radio edit and remind us of why we love this song. Loose Joints follows on track 2 with IS IT ALL OVER MY FACE. Labelled "Late", disc two delights.  On it you'll find the superb classic, MYSTERY OF LOVE (Instrumental) by Fingers, Inc.  Just when you are getting over that musical high, we are blessed with Ten City's DEVOTION (Bam Bam's house mix).  Right song, right mix!  With Marshall Jefferson on production and Byron Stingly on vocals, they can do no wrong.  THIS is house music! If you are looking to flex with the funk, you'll dig Manu DiBango's SOUL MAKOSSA, track 5.  Afrobeat flavor!  Check for the horns.  R n B lovers, feel up on track 7, Ashford & Simpsons STAY FREE.  R n B bliss!

Fine collection of grooves 28 Sept. 2000
By BP - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
David Manusco was famous for his 'house party' at the 'Loft', a place where dancing, food, light and exellent music all blend together (see the book "Last night a dj saved my life"). He was even more famous for not mixing the tunes, but just play them from start till end.
This compilation of 'forgotten' disco, funk and early house tunes showes that his dj-style is understandable if you have the right grooves. A perfect set of cd's, for dancin' as well as for listening.
