5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant for cooking Welsh cakes and pancakes 23 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase
Length: 4:11 Mins
Most of my comments about this Lodge Logic Round Griddle are contained in the accompanying video review, however I have briefly summarised them below.

* No non stick Teflon coating which can get damaged over time and get into your food

* It really does seem to make a difference to the taste of things like Welsh cakes - they don't seem to taste the same made in a Teflon coated frying pan

* It heats up really quickly

* It comes pre-seasoned to start you off with the seasoning process

* The build quality is superb. It is solid, well made and should last me a lifetime

* I don't have to worry about using metal implements in it - they won't damage the surface as they would with a non stick Teflon pan

* It is extremely heavy! I have fairly weak wrists and I often have to use two hands to pick it up from the stove

* It gets unbelievably hot and stays hot for ages. You need to leave it on the cooker to cool down before you can wash it up. Then handle also gets incredibly hot, you MUST use oven gloves to pick it up or you will really burn your hands.

* You can't use soap of any form on it to clean it. It gets hot really quickly and I have burned things on it. The temptation is very great to get a bowl of hot soapy water to scrub it - but I have to stop myself

* It does need to be seasoned every time I use it - but that is not a fault with this particular item, it would be the same for all cast iron pans

This is a really sturdy, good quality piece of cooking equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Piece Of Kit 27 Mar 2010
Ordered this last week to make Irish Soda , Wheaten & Potato Farls .
It's a heavy quality cast iron griddle. The Farls are soooooooo good made on this griddle. Taste way better than the bakery ones. Comes already treated with oil to give a " non Stick" type of surface.
All you do out of the box is , step 1.rinse under medium hot water with a soft brush or sponge thingy ,
( no washing up liquid please) dry it . Step 2 Rub some sunflower oil on the cooking surface , low to med heat and off you go. When finished , repeat Step 1 to clean , re-oil the whole griddle sparingly and store it until next time.
Cast Iron has always been best for even heat distribution accross the cooking surface.
Much healthier than toxic aluminium too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect chapatis! 14 Sep 2010
We bought this griddle because, try as we might, we could not make good chapatis. They always ended up too crispy. Not any more - with a nice sticky dough, thinly rolled, this griddle makes a perfect chapati which can be folded into quarters "just like in an Indian restaurant". It gets much hotter than a frying pan and obviously has just the right surface for cooking them. The handle gets pretty hot, but this isn't surprising as it is made from cast iron. Silicone handle protectors are easily available.

(I must own up - when I say "we" above, I should really have said "my wife"!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Glad I Chose This One! 22 Aug 2011
In the process of ridding my kitchen of non-stick surface cookware, I decided to purchase this griddle as add-on equipment to another Lodge cast iron pan and a Chasseur cast iron pan. I purchased it on a whim, really. It is now the most frequently used frying pan in my kitchen! It's extra easy to flip anything on this griddle due to the shallow sides.

There are a couple of dissatisfied reviews about this griddle that mystify me. I have successfully cooked over-easy fried eggs and pancakes on this griddle. It did come pre-seasoned, which I didn't find to be a problem. On the Lodge website, they say their pre-season oil is soy based:
"The cast iron is sprayed with a soy-based vegetable oil and then baked on at a very high temperature. The heat allows the oil to penetrate into the iron, creating a black patina finish with superior appearance and performance than home seasoning."
Why one would scrub this off is a mystery to me, since it gives you a "head start" in seasoning the pan... which takes time with cast iron. Patience pays dividends.

As I continue to use and care for my griddle, it will become even more well-seasoned and will probably become even more non-stick than it is now. Best of all, it will last a lifetime. I'm actually sorry I didn't buy a cast iron griddle years ago! Now I'm making up for lost time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect pan 31 Mar 2013
By A Cactus TOP 1000 REVIEWER

This is my go-to pan. Follow the cast iron seasoning upkeep tips found all over the web and you will be looking for excuses to use it. Perfect for fried breakfast and US pancakes. I advise getting a cloth handle cover and a thin flat bladed metal spatula to keep the frying surface mint which sadly do not seem to be available in UK. I imported a perfect spatula from US Amazon for about 10 all in but note you are not allowed the ones with a wooden handle (euro rules?) search "OXO SteeL Lasagna Turner"

5.0 out of 5 stars a dead cert winner 19 Oct 2009
I own one of these It is a superbly simple device. Perfect for "Pancakes" & Drop scones. Easy to clean just a green dish sponge and hot water and it's done. Good gear this Lodge stuff. All that I own works superbly but it does need seasoned properly. Info available via " Google". Enjoy it. Good value for your money - Should last forever and a day.
