... the story behind the Locke and Key series remains as strong as ever.

We continue to see the Locke children pursuing the Dark Lady, both utilising and avoiding the dangers of the myriad of keys at the Keyhouse.

If you are already familiar with Hill's writing and Rodriguez' artwork, and by book 4 of the series, you really should be, then I don't need to remind you that you are buying a quality product.

But...

Book 4 stands apart from its predecessors in some negative ways. There are parts of the story that just skip over what could be details rich in story and danger. The danger is portrayed well enough through the artwork, but it's as if Hill couldn't fit what was in Rodriguez' head in to the story proper, and so what you get is a stuttering montage of fantasy tableau.

There is also no introduction to book 4, and there is no ribbon. Call me a pedant, but hardcover editions of any kind are meant to have ribbons. The only "extra" you're getting with this is an (apparently pretty rare) hardback (as it took 5 weeks to arrive) and the fact that it will last more than 5 reads off your shelf.

So whilst Book 4 is still an excellent overall story, compared to previous efforts it just doesn't quite make the grade. If 3 1/2 existed, this would get it.

Volume 4 of Locke & Key 21 July 2011
By Cypress Green - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
NO SPOILERS
I eagerly awaited the arrival of this volume, as this series has become my new favorite! I ran into a little disappointment, but not much.
The new hardcover is just as lovely as the last ones - glossy details on a matt background. The front endpapers show illustrations of keys from previous volumes, while new keys are on the back endpapers.

The opening story, "Sparrow," focuses mainly on young Bode. What makes this episode special is that a potentially horrifying series of events is toned down by the clever use of humor and artistic style. Some of the episode is drawn the same way as the rest of the series, but for most of it Rodriguez uses a "Calvin and Hobbs" style, and Hill adds pertinent, funny dialog. The illustrative styles are interspersed. Very cleverly done. The episode, "February" shows small calendar pages next to the events pictured, helping to connect short events that happen in quick succession. Only a scene or several are necessary for these bits, and without some bridging the episode would have been a muddle.

The only thing I disliked about this volume was that several keys were introduced in too quick succession, without the details of their discovery or the details of their use. A frame or two is all provided in a couple of cases. As the book moved on, though, I could see how this was necessary to avoid slowing the plot to a crawl. Still, I wanted to know more!

Hill also addresses the stick subject of racism without becoming preachy. He moves the plot along well, revealing more on the mystery surrounding the black key and the missing teens. The last episode was sure to end in a horrifying manner...and it did, but not how I expected! In addition, he manages to bring some major events to a head while simultaneously throwing the main characters into a new morass of confusion. And they don't even know it!

How will I survive until the next book?

Another great Volume 31 July 2011
By Daniel Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
As anyone who as read the previous volumes of Locke and key or purchased the single issues or both as I have, know what a brilliant story and amazing artwork this series gives us. This doesnt change and we only get deeper into the lives of the Locke children and the mysterious keys. What does change is Hill starts to experiment with different styles. Some might desire the same pace storytelling as in past issues however I feel it doesnt hurt the story at all. I feel anyone who has followed Locke from the start has grown with the characters and no longer needs every key explained and the plot slowed just to introduce a new key. There is much more detail and depth being developed within the characters that as readers we dont need to know where every key was found and how they figured out what each did. The real mystery especially for the children, the dark lady, the cave, and thier fathers past are being disected. This volume ends in a big way making the wait for the next vol almost unbearable. My advice is to buy the issues its a great enough series that its nice to have both. New readers start with Welcome to Lovecraft and im sure you will be hooked and on to this volume within a day as long as you can buy the volumes in between. Old readers why havent you gotten this already? It only continues an already excellent story and pushes us further and deeper into the mysteries of the Lockehouse.

This series continues to be the best out there. Book 4 is just as awesome as the 3 before.
If you are still reading this stop, and go read Keys to the Kingdom.
