Product Description

New York Times bestselling writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez, the creators behind the acclaimed Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft, return with the next chapter in the ongoing tale, Head Games. Following a shocking death that dredges up memories of their father's murder, Kinsey and Tyler Locke are thrown into choppy emotional waters, and turn to their new friend, Zack Wells, for support, little suspecting Zack's dark secret. Meanwhile, six-year-old Bode Locke tries to puzzle out the secret of the head key, and Uncle Duncan is jarred into the past by a disturbingly familiar face. Open your mind - the head games are just getting started!

The second chapter in Joe Hill's brilliant dark magical mystery. The Locke kids have survived the traumas of book one but in this one the threat is far more insidious. They have a viper in their midst disguised as Tyler Locke's new best school friend Zack Wells. Zack is the mysterious creature Bode met trapped in the well house in book one. He's a nasty piece of work too, ruthlessly murdering or manipulating anyone who can unmask him. Hill creates great characters with complex history and psychology. It wouldn't work if the characterisation wasn't so well crafted.
The big concept in this one is the head key. It can unlock the top of your head like a musical box. If they ever make a film of this... well the scenes with the open heads are going to be weird-out city. The concept doesn't end there though. Once opened the head can be used like a memory box. Stuff a book in there and you'll instantly know everything the book describes. Or you can take things out... memories... or even emotions. Kinsey extracts the voices that make her fearful or tearful. And by some strange trick you can peer into your own head and look at the landscape of your persona as a montage of visual representations. Don't expect any major resolutions in these 6 issues. It's mainly building the story, the background, the characters and the suspense of knowing that the Big Bad Wolf has made himself comfortably at home within the trust of Tyler, Kinsey and even Bode. The fools.
The art by Gabriel Rodriguez is still very good, especially how he pulls off representing all the open head chicanery.

There is *no* reason why, if you want to buy Locke and Key, you shouldn't buy the hardback edition.

The binding cover is beautiful - the picture on here does not do it justice. There are nice sketches of the layout of the Keyhouse on the inside covers to front and back, as well as some great cover / concept images at the back.

The introduction by Warren Ellis is sharp and witty. Joe Hill's storytelling is, as ever, flawless, and the edgy graphics complement the dark and complex story fantastically well. His characters are believable, the dark fantasy is plausibly explained, and Rodriguez' artwork helps bring it all to life - it's the minor details, such as the sound "effects" when characters are opening doors, the non-verbal actions - that help to make the depth of Locke and Key come to life.

I must point out that, at this time, the paperback edition is also slightly more expensive than the hardback - so why not treat yourself to a beautiful edition that will stand the test of time - as you will want to read this again and again.

I can't believe I am the first to review this book. Volume 1 was excellent and volume 2 continues the fine work. The illustrations are amazing. I read the book twice. Once to follow the story and then a second time just to soak in the beautiful drawings.
Joe Hill is a great author and he expands the story out in volume 2. The story does not flinch at all. This series will have a resonance I am sure of that.
If you have not read any of Locke and Key before order all the volumes and then start with Volume 1 and clear a full day in a diary. If you have never read any Joe Hill before start with Heart shaped box I did!
