There is a great sense warmth to this music. The Parley of Instruments perform the pieces so well - the viols weave a rich tapestry of sounds. It is well supported by harmonies in the lutes and organ. Although there is a slight sense of melancholy in the music, there is also a great sense of well-being and structure. Certainly a delightful album of music from a relatively obscure but creative epoch of English music.

on listening to this sublime broken consort and in my case the unknown quantity of composer matthew locke, a choice i made half at random and half with that imperceptible edging towards something unknown one senses will pay dividends, i was rewarded with the innate melancholy beauty i had hoped to encounter. i would recommend this music to anyone who has mananged thus far to protect their endangered sensibility and who may harbour a raging thirst for entrance to inner worlds not associated with the culturally pestilent stricken one we are forced to live in presently.
