5.0 out of 5 stars Complex Sequel Exhilarating 27 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This sequel to HIDING THE ELEPHANT (Simon Grant Mysteries)is even better than the first and that was one great read.

Once again we are taken back to the England of the 1990s and also the 1960s in various flashbacks which only enhance the story and flesh out the characters and their motivations. This is another of Mira Kolar Brown's complex mysteries that is a joy to read, although it is not an easy task because of the complexities of the plot and the many diverse characters she introduces. I usually whip through a book in 2-3 days, but not this one. It took me over a week to read because I had to reread sections to keep the story straight in my head and to truly appreciate her many interesting characters.

Inspector Simon Grant is a complex man who is very moral and forthright on some fronts, but not in others. He is involved in an adulterous relationship with his wife Pippa's sister whom he has impregnated. Very spicy stuff.

Ms. Kolar Brown deftly deals with many issues in this novel, not to mention a double serial killing of two young women. The identity of the killer and the motives were a complete surprise to me.

This is a very good read and I hope Ms. Brown will be continuing with further adventures of Simon Grant.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gave up at 70% mark 9 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded the first book 'Hiding the Elephant' and this second book at the same time. I agree that the second book is far better than the first one but by that I mean that I gave up at the 70% mark rather than earlier. It didn't hold my attention and even although I kept reading hoping that it would get better eventually I ran out of patience and deleted it. I really, really tried to like this book espcially given the high ratings by prevous reviewers but it just didn't work for me, seemed to jump about a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump 19 Feb 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Mira Kolar-Brown's second book, "Lock Up You Daughters", is, if anything, even better than her first, "Hiding the Elephant". HIDING THE ELEPHANT (Simon Grant Mysteries) But that's not to say that you should skip the second and plunge immediately into the first.
That would be a twofold mistake. First, because you'd be passing up a terrific book, and, second, because Mira reveals, in "Daughters", some things that remain unresolved and mysterious in "Elephant".
And, once you've been there, you can't go back.
Folks already familiar with Mira's work are going to be pleased to return to her England of the early nineties where they can, once again, catch up with Simon Grant.
Simon, for those of you who have yet to meet him, is a moral cop who leads a complicated personal life with his wife and the woman he loves.
And they are not the same person.
"Daughters" focuses on the murder of two women, separated by years in time, but whom we ultimately discover to have been victims of the same killer.
And both the identity of that killer, and the motive for the deeds, will surprise you.
At least, they did me.
This book, on Kindle, is an absolute steal. Buy it.

What a delight to see the second mystery featuring Simon Grant on offer! As the first, this is a great read - great characters and ambience - and a plot to keep you turning the pages! Highly and heartily recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Twists and turns on every page 29 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lock up Your Daughters - an exciting and taut psychological thriller, featuring policeman Simon Grant and entourage.

From the beginning pages the story unfolds, with many twists and turns. Characters are introduced regularly, and the yarn gets off to a great pace.

Each chapter has a title heading and date - and you need to keep your wits about you as Simon flits between different periods in his life, both present and back to university days.

And you have to pay particular attention to these periods as numerous clues are slipped in catch the reader unawares.

So, masses to think about and I have to confess I did NOT know who the murderer was until Mira K-B revealed all.

I would have given this the full Monty of 5*****, but for 2 minor things. I did have a bit of difficulty in the initial chapters, in keeping up with the rather largish cast, and I didn't really take in the dates - and these are very important, as I've already explained. Perhaps the fault lies with me, but I believe there might have been too much thrown in, in too short a time.

Saying all that, it is a rattling good story, lots of unique things to think about and I would read another of Ms K-B's books given the chance.

I wish there was the wherewithal to award this 4.5 stars as this is what the book merits.
Good luck, Mira - a great read that kept me engrossed for days!

1.0 out of 5 stars Deleted after 27% 18 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I hate not to finish a book but this drove me mad. What started as a potentially good story turned into a total shambles. So many detours into various stages of Simon Grants past made my head spin with barely a mention of the murder investigation that was going on.
Sadly at 27% read, i had lost all track of what was going on and who was who, and was cross with myself for slogging on as long as I did when i could have been reading something good.

1.0 out of 5 stars couldn't get in to it 17 Jun 2012

I just didn't get this book at all. It was jumping backwards and forwards from one story to another and I never did discover what the relevance was. Unfortunately, once I start a book I have to continue with it which is most annoying sometimes!
Even at the end I did not see how everything was meant to come together?
Just not for me I'm afraid.
