Ordnance Survey Landranger Map 33, titled Loch Alsh, Glen Shiel, & Loch Hourn, covers that portion of the West Highlands of Scotland nearest the Isle of Skye. At a 1:50,000 scale and featured a multi-colored presentation of terrain, contoured relief and physical structures, the Landranger series are ideally suited for navigation by automobile and on foot.
Landranger Map 33 picks up the road to Skye and the mystical Glen Shiel from the end of Lock Cluanie through Loch Duich Loch Alsh and the bridge and ferry to the Isle of Skye. The famous Eilean Donan Castle is located on a small island where the two lochs intersect. The notable hills called the Five Sisters of Kintail provide the north side of the road leading through Glen Shiel. Along the Sound of Sleat which separates the mainland of Scotland from Skye are two significant sea lochs, Hourn and Nevis, whic provide some access to the rugged Highlands beyond. In this part of Scotland, there are few roads and centers of population. Hikers and trekkers not deterred by the notoriously fickle weather may find this area worth exploring.
Landranger Map 33 is very highly recommended as a planning and navigation aid to those planning to explore this portion of the Scottish Highlands.
