Product Description

"Trev Irwin didn’t believe in ghosts, which made it something of a shock when he saw one."

Working as an estate agent in the town of Brackenford isn’t the hardest job in the world – just ask Trev Irwin. He knows the market inside out, house prices are steady, and the only competition in the office is Barry, who has all the wit and charm of a mouth ulcer.

But there are other forces at work in Brackenford besides the unquenchable desire of grannies to buy bungalows, as Trev discovers when he witnesses a shadowy entity possess a man in a local café. A man who goes straight home and murders his wife and her lover. With a cricket bat.

A lifelong sceptic of the paranormal, Trev is still trying to rationalise these events when he discovers that his own grandfather is rather more than the curmudgeonly whisky-enthusiast he appears to be. The old man is also Brackenford’s Custodian, a role which requires him to keep the peace among the town’s supernatural residents, and he believes that Trev can help him.

Trev disagrees; but when he inadvertently foils an assassination attempt on Brackenford’s most famous resident, the slick supermarket tycoon Alastair Kolley, he finds that he’s upgraded his status from “potential collateral damage” to “target” in the eyes of the bad guys. But who are the bad guys? Is it the tabloid-reading ghouls who live in the sewers? The werewolf self-help group that meets in the church hall? Or the local lord of the manor, who looks pretty sprightly for a man who’s over 150 years old? Trev hasn’t a clue, and the only help he’s got comes from a septuagenarian, a puritanical Victorian ghost, and the world’s most sarcastic cat.

Yep – he’s basically screwed.

More About the Author

Hello everyone, I'm Nick Moseley and this is my author bio.

(I tried writing this bio in the third person, but frankly it made me feel a bit silly. Although doing it in the first person makes it feel like an online dating profile instead... sigh.)

I'm in my thirties and have been writing for my own amusement for as long as I can remember. In May 2013 I published my urban fantasy novel "Location, Location, Damnation" on Amazon Kindle, and in the process discovered that - to my mild surprise - after thirty years of scribbling I had finally written something that people would pay to read. The book is the first in a series called "The Brackenford Cycle" and will be followed by book two, "Hangman's Pond", just as soon as I can get it finished.

The genres I enjoy reading are fantasy, SF, horror and crime, and my own work contains elements from all these. My favourite authors include Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Jim Butcher, Ian Rankin, Stephen King and Jasper Fforde, among many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down! 18 May 2013

I won't go into the details about the plot as the synopsis covers this quite well and I don't want to give too much away (I hate spoilers). I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pacing was spot on building to a great climax but without slowing down on the way. I often found myself with the refrain of 'just one more chapter' meaning that I was late getting to bed because I didn't realise how late it was getting.

The main character Trev is definitely an anti hero, he is flawed as a person which makes him that much more believable as a character. I suspect that we all have someone like him in our lives. The sense of humour in the book plants the tongue firmly in the cheek and made me smile and laugh out loud. Even though the book is based on concepts that we are all familiar with (vampires, werewolves and a slightly unwilling hero) there are some very interesting takes on these concepts within the book. I love the idea of the ghouls who speak in tabloid newspaper language because they live in the sewers and no one throws away classic literature.

I am a big fan of writers such as Jim Butcher and Mike Carey. I love books which have original ideas with a strong current of humour coursing through them, and this ticks those boxes. I am really looking forward to book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised 26 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After putting off buying this book due to being acquainted with the author, I have been very pleasantly surprised.

I started reading with a little apprehension and found the first couple of chapters a little hard to get into, but once I got past the preconceived ideas I had formed, I really enjoyed the read. I found myself cheering on Trev and loving the introduction of Oscar. The mixture of comedy and fantasy slots in very nicely with my personal library.

Well done Nick. I am now very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's this guy come from? 18 May 2013

From the moment I purchased the book I've not been able to put it down. It's reminiscent of Neil Gaiman's style whilst also delivering something completely original. This is the only book I can find from this author. I eagerly anticipate the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book - didn't want it to finish! 25 Sep 2013

This book has an unusual storyline which is very entertaining and kept me very engrossed. It is very well written and so refreshing to read a book that doesn't have glaring spelling or grammatical mistakes.

If you like a good read with plenty of comedy, fantasy and action, then this is the book for you. I was really sad when it came to the last page!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story 10 July 2013
By Mike H
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book successfully treads the line between modern fiction and fantasy novels. It is very entertaining not least of all because of he main characters sarcasm. The plot is well developed and the reader is gently introduced to a fantasy realm that lies parable to the world we know. As someone who generally does not read fantasy novels I was mildly apprehensive about this book but it i woven very well into a modern setting with life size characters and witty dialogue. Time for part two of the Brackenford Cycle, as soon as you're ready please author!
