Biography

When they agreed the unwritten law that time-honoured artists with brilliant track records get less creative as they go on, Mark Knopfler obviously wasn't paying attention. He was too busy writing, recording, touring and enjoying it all.

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

This soundtrack (along with Ry Cooder's for Paris, Texas and Ennio Morricone's for Once Upon a Time in America, to name two other examples) is the kind of music that CDs were made for. Some of it is so delicate, so quiet, that it could disappear underneath the rumble and noise of a vinyl LP. You'd never know this was the score to a comedy--even a gentle wisp of a comedy like Bill Forsyth's picture. Some of it could pass for Scottish- flavored ambient music by Brian Eno. "The Rocks and the Water" seems to rise up like the tide with electronic calls that suggest the music of whales or dolphins. The sound of the sea whispers behind several atmospheric tracks, but Knopfler's guitar is also featured up-front some of the more overtly melodic tunes. The overall impression is luminous and evanescent as the Northern Lights. --Jim Emerson

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, a Superb Sountdrack 4 Aug 2006
By Geoffrey Millar TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is simply one of the best soundtrack albums you can buy, and, remarkably, is just as good if you haven't seen the film.

It's beautiful, atmospheric music which is nevertheless very enjoyable and showed us another side to Mark Knopfler's music.

There's one (very enjoyable) vocal track, by Gerry Rafferty, but the rest of the music is instrumental, with some ethereal, almost classical themes.

One Australian TV channel played 'Stargazer' over the awful footage of the Challenger Space Shuttle, and the music had such beauty and dignity that it seemed most appropriate.

There's not a dud track and the closing Local Hero Theme is one of my all time favourite pieces of music.

This music made a beautiful film ever more beautiful.

Every time I hear this music reminds me of my homeland and like the ending of the film, it makes me think of what I miss about Scotland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning! 27 Mar 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the most moving albums I have heard in a long time. My personal favourite is 'Wild Theme' for its sheer beauty and calm. It takes you right back to nature and the finer things in life, it reminds you of loved ones you remember, old romances and anything that warms the spirit, so listen to this track especially, and just try and say that you didn't cry at the end!
