Book Description

A beautiful and touching story filled with garden magic from a classic storyteller.

Product Description

He's older than anyone can tell. Older than the trees. Older than anybody.

For as long as she can remember, Lucy has wanted to catch a glimpse of the mysterious green man who lives in Grandpa Will's garden: Lob.

You have to be very special to see him; that's what Grandpa says. Lucy's parents think Lob's just imaginary, but Lucy knows he exists. And she can't believe it when she finally spots Lob in the gooseberry bushes.

But Lucy's world is about to be shattered by a terrible event. What will happen to Lob now - and will she ever see him again?

Linda Newbury, with the vivid embroidery of Pam Smy's illustrations, has conjured a real green man right out of the woods and stories of legend.

A book for all ages 9 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
Lyrical and deceptively simple, this is a story that will appeal to all ages from 8-88. With the beautiful illustrations by Pam Smy it fits together like all the best pieces of music and deals with the big questions surrounding life and death and regeneration with the lightest of touches. Story telling at its best.

LOB 11 April 2011
Format:Hardcover
One of the most impressive books for children I have read. Beautiful poetic language conveying the inner world of Lob, the green man who lives in grandpa's garden, is embedded in a moving tale about a little girl mourning the death of her beloved grandad. Stumming on so many levels, not least on account of the beautiful illustrations. Imaginative and likely to inspire a sense of awe and care when it comes to nature.
As a result of reading this book my little girl constantly points at flowers and plants growing in unlikely places and delightedly exclaims:"Lob work".
Absolutly wonderful, I have already bought two more copies to give away as birthday presents and feel almost evangelical about this book.

Linda Newbery writes beautifully, but her story might not be quite so vivid without Pam Smy's exquisite illustrations, bringing the sights and sounds of nature to life. They just make you smile! Any garden-lover will be smiling and nodding in agreement, as Grandpa shows his granddaughter, Lucy, the magic of germinating seeds and nurturing his vegetable plot. He says that he is helped by the elusive and ageless Lob, "who some can see and some can't", and that he can only see him "sideways" from the corner of his eye. Lucy is enchanted, and staunchly believes in him in spite of her parents teasing her. The book is as entertaining and thought-provoking for an adult as for any 7 - 10 year old. Highly recommended.
