Detestable 23 Nov 2008
By Roger Rebec VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have never really liked stories where children of advantaged parents squander the opportunities their background gives them but these are the bases of many a good and interesting tragedy. This is not one of them.

Nothing in the script lends an aura of crumbling nobility to the proceedings. The language is frequently foul and, although the film is competently photographed, the visual images do not invoke any sympathy for the characters.

Neither do the acting performances. After 20 minutes of screen time, not one actor had engaged my interest or sympathy. After 40 minutes, Vinnie Jones appears in the first of his two scenes. There is something akin to Judi Dench's Oscar winning performance, which is a priceless jewel in a glittering crown, in "Shakespeare in Love" here. Although Mr Jones is far from being Dame Judi's equal as a thespian, he does have the ability to ignite the screen with his presence and his appearances mark the only occasions when a member of the cast connects with the audience, albeit in his familiar bad guy gangster role.

I remember hearing very little about this film from when it was first released (escaped is probably a better word) but it certainly seems to have done no one any good. Vinnie Jones' movie career seems to have stalled since. It is not always a good thing to be the only feature worthy of note in a piece of dross. Mr Jones is not on screen long enough to make the price of purchase worthwhile.

Avoid.

Load of rubbish 15 Jun 2009

Very poor film that I gave up on before the end. The plot is really awful and you feel like slapping the lead character for being such an idiot. There are much better films than this, I'd suggest you find one!

Watching 'Loaded' is a lot like being the only sober person at a stag night where everyone else is completely tanked up. They seem to be having a good time, but you don't...
In fact, most of the movie is an extended stag party, and the story revolves around a preppie young man who goes wildly off the rails after a weekend of sex n drugs. Next thing you know he's an accessory to murder, his family is ripped apart and his girlfriend's life is in danger. If it was 15 minutes shorter and given better direction, this could've been a 4-star film, in fact.

It's certainly not the worst movie I've sat through, and does have a couple of redeeming features -- Vinne Jones gets the best lines even if he is only on screen for less than five minutes. There's plenty of girlish eye-candy, a loud soundtrack, blazing guns, shouting, swearing and snorting, and there is even a solid plotline underpinning the action.
The trouble is that the audience doesn't understand the plot for most of the film, so we spent a lot of time puzzling over why the hero was being so dumb, and why the bad guy would even bother with half of what he was doing. If we'd been given a bit more of the back story then we could've enjoyed the development of the story -- as it was, the film seemed more like a series of disconnected and unlikely events.

Loaded is probably an ideal movie to watch at about 1am, after you've gotten back from the pub and eaten the kebabs. You can enjoy the partying and the punching and not worry too much about the logic. Probably not a movie to sit down and watch on Saturday afternoon when your parents have popped round for tea...

Drab
This is one of those movies that thinks it is smarter than it actually is.
Seems hopelessly out of date with scenes edited by garden shears.
Very drab.

Blink and you'll miss Vinnie Jones.
I have to start by saying I'm not a huge fan of Vinnie Jones, but I do think he brings a certain something extra to any scene in which he appears. Read more
