Like the Titanic dreging itself up from the bottom of the ocean, the unsinkable Liza Minnelli has once again returned to the world of live performance, and if this recording shows nothing else, it's the fact that you really can't keep a good dog down.
From the opening number, a charming, self-celebratory ditty named 'Liza's Back'('I took my bottle of pills/Tossed them away/I emptied the Booze/Went back to AA'), through to her more celebrated hits ('Some People', 'City Lights', and 'New York New York'), it's easy to tell that the woman is determined to entertain us, whatever the cost. Thankfully, the reportedly rigourous training and dieting seem to have paid off, and Liza pulls off an almost-impossible hour of what has always made her so wonderful: herself.
Her voice is no longer what it was (the liner notes, by a certain Mister David Gest, claim otherwise), but the raspiness and new depth actually adds a lot to some otherwise pretty standard numbers. Check out her everything-including-the-kitchen-sink rendition of Roy Orbision's 'Crying', and you'll see what I mean. On the downside, she shows her age, to a certain extent, on one or two of the more physically demanding numbers, like 'Mein Herr' and the immortal 'Cabaret'.
She jokes, laughs, takes pot-shots at her marriage and, in short, has produced one of the most entertaining live recordings in recent memory. Needless to say it's a must-have for the fans, but it's also such a fun CD to listen to, that anyone will be able to pick it up and access the dynamic Vaudeville stage energy that Liza alone is capable of generating. The whole shebang finishes with an acapella version of 'I'll Be Seeing You', which surprises the listener and disproves the critic: Liza's most definitely Back.
Now let's just hope that she's okay!

Liza Minnelli is no stranger to comebacks. It seems that every few years Liza gives up booze, puts on the sequins and stages a triumphant tour de force (carneige hall 1979, 1987, radio city 1991)
While i found myself willing Liza to make it again, i think this time she dosent quite. Her voice has declined to self parady and her never great range has narrowed even further, but you have to admire her sheer determination, will power and old fashioned star quality.
Her raspy voice is not compleatly unapealing on such numbers as "Don't Smoke In Bed" and "crying" but on the big numbers such as "Cabaret", "Roses Turn" and especially "New York New York" she really does strain and rarley makes it. We all love liza but and i just hope she finds another outlet for her talents (a film, a play, a sitcom) rather than rehashing the sally Bowles routine in the style of an above average drag queen. god bless her.
