Product Description

Product Description
A short account of the making of Livingston new town describing some of the achievements and challenges since 1962 in creating a sub-regional centre of 45,000 people from a greenfield site to the west of Edinburgh. This work examines the history of the rural area designated Scotland's fourth new town in 1962 and Livingston's place in the context of the UK new-town movement and the Scottish economy. It describes how Livingston was developed from the master plan to the reality of industry, schools, housing and parks, and the challenge of building the town centre. The book answers such questions as: where did the people and businesses of Livingston come from and why?; what were their hopes and expectations and how did they come to think of Livingston as home?; and in what ways did they help to change the future of their town through the ecumenical experiment, forum, festivals and farms?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 20 May 2004
Commissioned by Livingston Development corporation (LDC) and written by Elspeth M Wills this book tells the tail of how one of the newest town in scotland came about this journey is detailed in every aspect and includes nearly everything which has happened within the town, right up to the last few days that the LDC was in existence. The few main things which i think made this book different from the other livingston books on the market as it has a good load of pictures and has information even about ghosts within the town. As a livingston resident my self since the early 1980's this book shows me the step by step process under taken by the LDC. As i look apon the changes which has happened. Now i know i have this book to look back at for many years to come, and one day i can pass it on to my children who can see how it all began. Buy it before its to late, dont think there will be many left.
