Book Description

1 Dec 2011 Living & Working in Britain
Whether you are already living or working in Britain or just thinking about it this is THE BOOK for you. Forget about those glossy guide books, excellent though they are for tourists; this book was written especially with you in mind and is worth its weight in crown jewels. Furthermore, this fully revised and updated 7th edition is completely redesigned and printed in full colour. Living and Working in Britain has been written to meet the needs of anyone wishing to know the essentials of British life however long your intended stay, you ll find the information contained in this book invaluable. General information isn t difficult to find in Britain; however, reliable and up-to-date information specifically intended for foreigners living and working in Britain isn t so easy to find, least of all in one volume. Our aim in publishing this book is to help fill this void, and provide the comprehensive, practical information necessary for a relatively trouble-free life. You may have visited Britain as a tourist, but living and working there is a different matter altogether. Adjusting to a different environment and culture and making a home in any foreign country can be a traumatic and stressful experience, and Britain is no exception. Living and Working in Britain is a comprehensive handbook on a wide range of everyday subjects and represents the most up-to-date source of general information available to foreigners in Britain. It isn t, however, simply a monologue of dry facts and figures, but a practical and entertaining look at life in Britain. Adjusting to life in a new country is a continuous process, and although this book will help reduce your novice phase and minimise the frustrations, it doesn t contain all the answers (most of us don t even know the right questions to ask!). What it will do, is help you make informed decisions and calculated judgements, instead of uneducated guesses and costly mistakes. Most importantly, it will help you save time, trouble and money, and repay your investment many times over. Although you may find some of the information a bit daunting, don t be discouraged. Most problems occur only once and fade into insignificance after a short time (as you face the next half a dozen ...). Most foreigners in Britain would agree that, all things considered, they love living there. A period spent in Britain is a wonderful way to enrich your life, broaden your horizons, and, with any luck (and some hard work) you may even make your fortune. I trust this book will help you avoid the pitfalls of life in Britain and smooth your way to a happy and rewarding future in your new home.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read before you move 22 Jun 2013
By Anton
I was considering the possibility of moving to Great Britain quite for some time. And like many expats-to-be was idealizing the experience in my imagination. After reading this book I see things much more realistically, so I think I will consider other countries before making the final decision. It is great to have an opportunity to explore real life abroad before actually getting there and "Living and working in Britain" has helped me immensely. I'm eager to read other books from this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars living and working in britain 2 May 2012

If anyone is considering or will be moving to Britain this is a very good book to read! Loads of information about most important things to consider. My only remark would be that on a similar book written for people moving to France includes a little more specific information on the different counties/areas...I would recommend this to be included, since specific information such as job prospects, good schools etc on each area (like Devon or cornwall)would be helps to decide or explore the advantages of moving to one area as opposed to another.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the lot 6 Mar 2012
Bought this book for a mate who's coming to work here with his family. Having looked at the alternatives, including 'official' stuff from the British Council (which is aimed mostly at overseas students), I was rather downhearted. Almost everything available was woefully out-of-date and many publications were aimed at people wanting to pass those rote-learning tests that grant citizenship. Bill Bryson's 'Notes from a small island' was fun, but nearly 20 years out of date. We've changed a lot in that time.

This particular book, however, is great: up-to-date, comprehensive and thoroughly practical. I learnt a bit too.

This is the must-have guide for any non-Brit coming to our sceptered isle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and fun to read 29 Jan 2014
By L. Todd
As a British citizen with the task of sharing something of British culture with international students with good English, sections in this book lend themselves to lively discussion topics and comparisons between cultures.

It is also fun as well.

A good read.
