If there's a top lO list of books on ME/CFS, this book should be on it and right near the top. It's the very best book I've ever read by a physician. It's the most comprehensive book I've ever read on the subject, and I've read quite a few!
Living with M.E has up-to-date information on just about any question you've ever asked about this illness along with information on some questions that you've probably never even thought of! Having marital problems because of your awful illness? See page 321! Afraid this illness may be affecting your heart? See page 157! Thinking that you can't continue working? See page 333! Wondering if you should get vaccinated? See page 219! Wondering if your lupus was diagnosed on the correct testing? See page 1O3!
Dr Shepherd is clearly a cautious physician and, like most physicians, he's never biased - a fact that makes this book a more reliable source. It's an outstanding book that definitely deserves to be added to your collection

The prime purpose of my book is to provide up-to-date information on all aspects of this illness. I write as both a doctor/Medical Director of the ME Association and as someone who suffers from the illness, which was triggered by an attack of chickenpox.
By learning about the range of treatment options - both orthodox and alternative - currently available, appropriate changes in lifestyle, benefit provision, and all the practical and emotional aspects of coping with a long-term condition such as this, I hope that you, too, can now make a start on the road to recovery.
Subjects which are covered by chapters include:
Names, Definitions and Numbers (of people with ME/CFS);
History of ME/CFS in Different Parts of the World;
What Causes ME/CFS?;
Symptoms - principle and secondary;
Other Causes of Chronic Fatigue and their Diagnosis;
Quality of Life, Disability Assessment and Recovery Prospects;
Current Research;
Dealing with your Doctor;
Pregnancy;
Drug Treatments;
Self-Help;
Mind and Body;
Alternative and Complementary Approaches;
Children with ME/CFS;
Pregnancy;
Relationships;
Employment Issues;
Running your Home;
Increasing your Mobility;
Additional Help and DSS Benefits;
Useful Addresses;
Bibliography of over 5OO research References.
This is the third edition of my book which remains a best seller both here and abroad.

I have the original version of this book. Its good and also informative and is particularly useful if you wish to know how the brain is affected by CFS. It describes this aspect quite well, which other books seem to avoid. Still worth the money for a book on CFS that has stood the test of time.

This is a fantastic book. It carefully goes through every aspect of ME/CFS in a very methodical manner. No assertions are made without also substantiating why that assertion has been made. It gives all the references so that you can proceed with your own research or pass it to your GP for them to follow up. When he mentions a subject that will be covered later in the book he also states that it'll be covered later thereby saving you the effort of having to note it down for later.
As somebody suffering from this illness this book has been invaluable to me to allow me to manage my dealings with my GP and suggest further avenues for him to try. The book has acted as a springboard allowing me to carry out my own research and gave me a basic understanding of the medical phrases I need to look for.
My only gripe with the book is that it is now out of date. It's 2011 and the 3rd Edition was published in 1999, twelve years ago. Obviously medical knowledge has progressed since then so it'd be really good to have a new edition.

This has to be the best 1p I've ever spent. !!!!! I suffer with lots af ailments , including ME and Fibromyalgia. They aren't the same but the symptoms overlap. Dr. Shepherd , the author is himself a sufferer. So that means it does exist . Many people think that it is a mythical illness because it's mostly women that have it AND most of the doctors are male. Get the drift. Dr. Shepherd, being male and a fellow sufferer, sets out many very valuable pointers as to the what,why and when. A worthy book for all ME sufferers. Mine, at 1p, is somewhat out of date but was worth buying so I could see how good or otherwise about what was written. It's excellent so I may well buy it again in a more updated version. I'm now a member of the M.E. Association and feel their understanding and backing + this book have given me a better feeling about the world.

I haven't finished this book yet, but the first 150 pages are like reading a diary of my life!

The symptoms listed in the first few chapters have been such a relief to read, and have convinced me I'm not suddenly going to keel over, as I've feared for so many years.

I've had this for over twenty years now and it was uncanny reading the possible effects of this illness. I've just been referred to a CFS clinic, and the list I provided them with of things I've had wrong over the years are all contained in this book. It's enough to make me feel better already, that I'm not so strange after all!

I will return with a further review once I've finished the book, but thank you Charles Shepherd, I feel like I know you already
