The reviews for this set have been largely on the money, I think. This is great value, and contains great performances in great sound. Original liner notes are also included in a nicely put together CD sized book (an overview of this 60CD project would have been nice, but you can't have everything).

Trev-R's review already contains the official track listing, but you actually get much more than this on a dozen of the discs (sometimes another complete LP! Here are the CDs this effects with the additional tracks in brackets.

8 FIEDLER, ARTHUR Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue; Concerto in F; An American in Paris; Variations on "I Got Rhythm" (+ CUBAN OVERTURE)
9 REINER, FRITZ Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (+ MARCHE MINIATURE, MARCHE SLAVE, NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN, POLOVTSIAN MARCH, RUSSLAN AND LUDMILLA OVERTURE, CALAS BREUGNON OVERTURE)
19 REINER, FRITZ Dvorák: New World Symphony (+ BARTERED BRIDE OVERTURE, SCHWANDA POLKA AND FUGUE)
20 REINER, FRITZ Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade (+ STRAVINSKY'S SONG OF THE NIGHTINGALE)
22 FIEDLER, ARTHUR Offenbach: Gaïté parisienne (+ LA BOUTIQUE FANTASTIQUE)
24 FIEDLER, ARTHUR Hi-Fi Fiedler (ORIGINAL ALBUM + ESPANA, LISZT'S HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY NO 2, RAKOCSZY MARCH)
32 STOKOWSKI, LEOPOLD Rhapsodies (ORIGINAL ALBUM + LOHENGRIN PRELUDE TO ACT III, TANNHAUSER OVERTURE AND VENESBURG MUSIC)
36 REINER, FRITZ Vienna (ORIGINAL ALBUM + VIENNA BLOOD, ROSES FROM THE SOUTH, TREASURE WALTZ, THUNDER AND LIGHTNING POLKA)
38 FIEDLER, ARTHUR Pops Caviar (ORIGINAL ALBUM + GAYANE EXCERPTS, EUGENE ONEGIN POLONAISE, SLEEPING BEAUTY WALTZ, FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLEBEE, GALOP FROM MASQUERADE SUITE)
41 LANZA, MARIO Mario!

This boxed set of RCA Living Stereo CDs is astonishing in at least two ways. Firstly, the performances represent a precious legacy of music making by many legendary musicians of the mid-20th Century, mainly working in the USA during the 1950s and 1960s, particularly Munch in Boston and Reiner in Chicago. This was a time when musicianship came before marketing, and many of the performances remain unsurpassed after fifty or sixty years. Secondly, the auditory experience is often spellbinding, reflecting both the quality of the original RCA early stereo recording technique and the quality of the latest digital remastering. Several of the recordings are available as SACDs at premium price, but these standard CD versions (from the SACD masterings) are still very impressive and currently available in this boxed set at less than £1.50 per disc. Sony/BMG are to be praised and thanked for preserving these performances for the future, and for making them available at such a bargain price. Whether you are a seasoned collector with multiple versions of the core repertoire on your shelves, or a novice just beginning your exploration, you can't go wrong with this set - buy it whilst you can!

I didn't want to spend so much, as I already have many of the works here in other versions. But recent purchases have convinced me that even fifties recordings can still sound tremendous. So after reading the reviews on amazon.com (which I recommend)I plumped for it - and my, am I pleased!

As I write I am listening to Rubinstein's Brahms 1 (concerto) - a work I have loved for over forty years but never before heard like this, both exciting and romantic. Yesterday was a momentous Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra. These are performances of the Chicago Symphony in 54 & 55, conducted by Reiner.

After playing one of these discs I don't want to play more music immediately. I am reminded of myself as a young man going down to the empty platform at Waterloo tube station after a concert evening at the Royal Festival Hall, the melodies still thundering triumphantly round my brain and seeming to resonate into the underground space.

Tomorrow, Van Cliburn.
