Not for everyone.... 13 Aug 2011
By tucks1
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book for a friend's birthday this week and flicked through it for content before I wrapped it up. I was rather disappointed. Firstly, it appears to be solely US-based, which is not particularly helpful for European customers and rather misleading, given its European-looking cover and the fact its Amazon page makes no mention of its US origins). Secondly, a lot of it is more basic common sense than professional advice (i.e. repair shoes by using a cobbler, use up old food in recipes). Rest assured, there are general helpful hints (i.e. how to get cheaper cruises) and the book comes into it's own when dealing with straight financial stuff; but, all in all, a bit slim on content and only for the US market.

This is a really fantastic, pragmatic and "do-able" book. It doesn't matter where you are financially at the moment, there are so many tips and tricks you can implement immediately; my fav was definitely having a Spend Book-a book where you write down the purchases you want to make which are over and above "normal" purchases. This has proved absolutely invaluable to me.

What I love about the book is that Melissa makes clear at the beginning of the book that it is not about frugal living. It's a book about making informed choices; spending it on the things that give you pleasure versus mindlessly spending. "Save money on the things that aren't as important to you so you can afford to spend money on the things that are important to you".
Sounds very logical, but I knew I wasn't currently doing it.

I really love that Melissa gives you personal anecdotes from within her own life and also examples from "savvy" celebrities which I found really inspiring.
Her resources/bibliography section in itself is worth the price of the book. I've marked and highlighted so many books I need to move onto in my quest for "savvy living". I couldn't believe when I actually finished the book (this was clearly one book that was not going to be collecting dust on my bookshelf). I've been carrying it around with me everywhere, and every time I have a few minutes, out it comes with my highlighter pen.

In summary this is definitely a MUST read for the times we live. It's not preachy or full of financial stats and data. It's like having a chat and coffee with your savvy best-friend as she lets you into all her secrets. I can't recommend this book enough; a real treasure I won't be letting out of my sight for a long time.

a disappointment 15 Jan 2012

Do not waste your money on this one UNLESS
A. you are an American and live in America. It's 100% based on the USA system, way of living/thinking, mentality, shops etc. To a non-american (European) it sounds outlandish, common sense/practice or ridiculous (even though I spent more than a decade in NYC).
B. you are completely clueless and hopeless about how to cook, dress, present yourself and be in this world.
C. you enjoy reading the author's diary. More than half of it is examples that are very personal and situation-specific.
However, it does give a couple of good ideas from third parties that are quoted in the book.
