Book Description

27 Aug 1996 Resnick (Book 7)

When a man is found in the middle of Alfreton Road in the early hours one Sunday morning, stark naked and bleeding heavily from a chest wound, he is the latest in a series of viscous attacks on men.

Enquiries in the mean-streets of Nottingham's red-light district have brought the investigations to a dead end.

Charlie Resnick is the man for the job. And as if he hasn't had enough to deal with, he now has to provide police protection for a celebrity at the annual crime convention - an author with the some very unpleasant 'fan' mail.

Chronically short-staffed as he is, it's a guessing game as to when Resnick's lack of manpower will have fatal consequences.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best "beat-cop" author in Britain. 23 Feb 2004
Format:Paperback
These books are truly excellent. Unlike the cities of the succesful US crime author's, Britain isn't plagued by insane serial killers. Most crime is spontaneous, nasty & pointless. Likewise most criminals aren't clever- they don't have intimate knowledge of police procedures & certainly don't engage in battles-of-wits with the lead investigator.

The Resnick books are truly convincing for a number of reason's. I live in the Nottingham that John Harvey describes- D.I Resnick is based in Canning Circus police station a mile from where I live. He drinks in the "Polish club" which is next to the Polish Catholic Church just round the corner from my flat. The victims are taken to the hospital where I work. This makes these stories as "real" as fiction ever could be. In one book, the description of the house where the prime supsect lives could only be my neighbours house! Few authors can describe a city in the way that Harvey can. In fact only Ian Rankin's (D.I Rebus) Edinburgh can compare.

D.I Resnick is a fabulous character- very like David Jason's "Frost" or a working class "Morse". He loves jazz, Czech Pilsner & deli-sandwiches. His marriage break down would be stereo-typical if it wasn't quite so believable. Unlike virtually every other fictional detective he suffers from virtually no psycological problems & has no dark secrets. His detection relies on good policework from his team of detective constables. All of whom are convincing, well rounded characters. There's the almost Bridget Jones like Lynn Kellog who's mother keeps asking for grandkids, graduate cop D.C Patel, racist bully Marc Divine & a handful of others. Crimes are solved by a combination of witness statements & tip-offs from petty crooks. A murderer is as likely to be caught be luck as by any great show of "Sherlock Holmes style brilliance"

Sadly the series ended after 10 books, but Harvey is branching out with new characters & new cities..... I can't wait!

3.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book by John Harvey 15 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book by John Harvey. I thought the pace of the novel was very good and I enjoyed the banter from Millington and Divine, the detectives.

As I read I knew the locations with coming from Nottingham and I could identify the comings and goings in the bookshop and the mayhem after the American Author had stuff poured over her.

John Harvey is very good at describing things in his novels and his books are always a good read.

For anyone who has not read any of John's books I think you should as you will enjoy them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paperback book review. 24 Oct 2012

A good book that I found a little difficult to follow - but that's just me. I was around at the same period that the book portrays and found it fairly well sourced and researched.
