Product Description

Jane Brody, New York Times

"Contains inspring stories from affected women and information about diagnosis and treatment."

Synopsis

An estimated 10 million American women have PCOS - polycystic ovary syndrome. Most of these women have never heard of the hormonal disorder, but are often painfully aware of its symptoms: irregular menstrual cycles, excess facial and body hair, weight gain, and adult acne. PCOS is also the leading cause of infertility. If left untreated, the condition carries long-term risks for endometrial cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. This book sheds light on this under-reported, under-diagnosed endocrine disorder. Topics covered include: Causes of PCOS; Overcoming the symptoms; Choosing a physician; Getting a diagnosis; Receiving the best medical treatment; Infertility and getting pregnant; and Coping with the emotional impact of PCOS.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent look at this most confusing syndrome, 30 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Living with PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
I am 33 and have had PCOS for at least 17 years, I knew I had it, but was only "officially" diagnosed 3 years ago. I have spent many many hours researching this syndrome and have finally found a way to control it. I wish I had found this book years ago! It is up to date and covers all the symptoms of the syndrome, some you may not even be aware were linked. It not only discusses infertility, but the long term implications of PCOS. It has an excellent reference section at the back, and the only way it could be better is if it included references for the UK. There is hope for PCOS sufferers, from dealing with excess body hair to blood pressure and heart disease, it's all here. Find comfort and know that help is now at hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, basic information on PCOS, 21 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Living with PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
I was diagnosed with PCOS nearly a year ago, and have found out quite a bit about it, but I still found this book very helpful. The section that explains the menstrual cycle as it should be and as it is in PCOS sufferers was very well written, using plain english and easy to folow explainations. The Symtoms Section certainly revealed new information for me, but I would have liked the section on Alternative Treatments to have been expanded as that is the way I have chosen to treat my PCOS. I also thought the sections on the Emotional Impact and the Hope for the Future were very positively written. For those of us living in the UK the Resources section isn't relavant but with so much information available on the internet that isn't a problem. All-in-all a very informative book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book that is easy to read, 1 Feb 2001
This review is from: Living with PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
If this had been available ten years ago it would have helped me a great deal. I feel the book would have been more useful if the medical references to the material had been included so that your GP can confirm the information more quickly.
