Product Description

Remember that extraordinary phenomenon of Toyah, that elfin rock star who reinvented her image with every hit single? Living out Loud will reveal the real Toyah, and the long, often lonely journey to self-discovery. Being bullied at school for being dyslexic, getting in and out of the drug culture, finding love in a lasting marriage, losing literally every penny she owned. Her relationship with the media is a big theme and her awareness that they were controlling and destroying her life. This is a story about losing and finding oneself and about how some of the most positive lessons come out of the darkest experiences.

About the Author

Toyah dominated the Music Polls between 1979 and 1983 and won Best Female Singer in the 1982 Rock and Pop Awards. She has had 13 top 40 singles and made 15 solo albums. Since 1994 Toyah also has assumed a presenting career which includes Holidays, Fasten Your Seatbelts, Watchdog and Songs of Praise. She is currently filming a major new children's drama series.

a must read 10 Feb 2001
Format:Paperback
I picked this book up after a long wait and couldn`t put it down. The Toyah you see today is alot different from the Toyah growing up. She had a lot to fight in the early years. But she came though all of it.She is a lovely person who has time for her fans. Thank you for that Toyah. The book made me laugh and cry. It also took me back to the 70`s and 80`s. I been a fan from the early 80`s and still love the lady now. the story of her life as just begun. Its a must read for everybody. Keep up the good work Toyah! Hope to see you soon.... Paul Lomas

Toyah at her best 30 Jan 2001
Format:Paperback
Living out lound is definately an appropriate title for this book. I managed to buy a copy of this title on the 2nd day of it's release and i had finished it by the 5th! Toyah is an extremely versatile performer and the book is the same. It is funny, intelligent, scary, heart-renching and heart-warming all at the same time. It is also very honest which, in a biography, is obviously very appealing. It is quite charming also and, if you enjoy it, you would be able to pick out your favorite bits once you've read it ( i can think of many myself, but i don't want to give the content away!). I do, however, think that you would have to be a Toyah fan to enjoy this book (not an obsessed one but a fan all the same)if not you would probably find it hard to relate to. Definately a must for all Toyah fans and possibly a miss for those who aren't.

Format:Paperback
Toyah Willcox has overcome many personal problems to be the multitalented success we are used to seeing on our television screens today. This is a well written autobiography documenting her action-packed life so far. Reading this has turned me from a curious admirer to a fan!

Many themes run simultaneously throughout the book. Toyah has been battling with what could be described as inner demons nearly all her life, yet grappling with these has also been an essential driving force behind her hugely ambitious nature. Amongst other things, "Living Out Loud" is an inspiration to any creative individual finding themselves struggling with emotional and psychological darkness. A strong spirituality has helped Toyah through one crisis after another, even though this spirituality sometimes sits rather awkwardly next to her passionate and at times obsessive ambition.

There are countless little recollections featuring friends, family, fans and the rich and famous. Many of them are very funny. Her meetings with Katharine Hepburn and Sting in her early punk days are two that stick in the mind. Later on there is her involvement with the Royal Family Its A Knockout and a visit to Buckingham Palace. At the other end of the social scale, Toyah's account of her acting tour of prisons is thought provoking stuff on a different level. The last few chapters feature her unorthodox marriage to another seemingly unstoppable individual, Mister Robert Fripp, a hero of mine as it happens.

I strongly recommend this book. Just one thing though... Toyah doesn't mention Teletubbies once...!

Overall disappointing
Maybe it's ok for a long-time Toyah fan. There's been a wave of 80ies/70ies rock star autobiographies out there in the last months and I have to say that Toyah's was the worst one. Read more
