Product Description

Product Description

It is estimated that there are over 100,000 people suffering from M.E. in Britain today. Although not a new disease, M.E. (also known as 'yuppie flu') is at last being recognised and taken seriously, M.E. is short for Myalgic Encephalomyselitis, a term which relates to the parts of the body affected: Myalgic, the muscles; Encephalo, the brain; and Myselitis, the nerves. Until recently, many people suffering from M.E. had great difficulty in finding a diagnosis and a way of dealing effectively with the disease. Now fully updated, this comprehensive guide provides much-needed information about M.E. It describes the symptoms, what triggers it and who can get it and also discusses additional problems such as disordered sleep, depression, pain in the joints and difficulties with the eyes, ears and balance. A well-researched, up-to-date guide, "Living with M.E." is the book to buy for any sufferer who wants information not speculation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The very best book I've read by a physician, 10 Sep 2000
By A Customer
If there's a top lO list of books on ME/CFS, this book should be on it and right near the top. It's the very best book I've ever read by a physician. It's the most comprehensive book I've ever read on the subject, and I've read quite a few!

Living with M.E has up-to-date information on just about any question you've ever asked about this illness along with information on some questions that you've probably never even thought of! Having marital problems because of your awful illness? See page 321! Afraid this illness may be affecting your heart? See page 157! Thinking that you can't continue working? See page 333! Wondering if you should get vaccinated? See page 219! Wondering if your lupus was diagnosed on the correct testing? See page 1O3!

Dr Shepherd is clearly a cautious physician and, like most physicians, he's never biased - a fact that makes this book a more reliable source. It's an outstanding book that definitely deserves to be added to your collection

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive up-to-date information, 13 Sep 2000
By A Customer
The prime purpose of my book is to provide up-to-date information on all aspects of this illness. I write as both a doctor/Medical Director of the ME Association and as someone who suffers from the illness, which was triggered by an attack of chickenpox.

By learning about the range of treatment options - both orthodox and alternative - currently available, appropriate changes in lifestyle, benefit provision, and all the practical and emotional aspects of coping with a long-term condition such as this, I hope that you, too, can now make a start on the road to recovery.

Subjects which are covered by chapters include:

Names, Definitions and Numbers (of people with ME/CFS);

History of ME/CFS in Different Parts of the World;

What Causes ME/CFS?;

Symptoms - principle and secondary;

Other Causes of Chronic Fatigue and their Diagnosis;

Quality of Life, Disability Assessment and Recovery Prospects;

Current Research;

Dealing with your Doctor;

Pregnancy;

Drug Treatments;

Self-Help;

Mind and Body;

Alternative and Complementary Approaches;

Children with ME/CFS;

Pregnancy;

Relationships;

Employment Issues;

Running your Home;

Increasing your Mobility;

Additional Help and DSS Benefits;

Useful Addresses;

Bibliography of over 5OO research References.

This is the third edition of my book which remains a best seller both here and abroad.

I have the original version of this book. Its good and also informative and is particularly useful if you wish to know how the brain is affected by CFS. It describes this aspect quite well, which other books seem to avoid. Still worth the money for a book on CFS that has stood the test of time.
