Synopsis

Twin Brothers are on a Surreal Road Trip Across the USA. The sudden break-up with girlfriend, Emily Willow, finds Simon Raven, ex-amateur rock God and bored internet producer, on a Boeing 747 bound for Seattle. Led by his twin brother, Chris, who's more than happy to exchange a career in fashion photography for the open road, they embark on a personal mission to survive outside the system. Leaving London life far behind, the brothers are taken on a roller coaster ride of paranoia and self-dought as they bumble through bear-infested wilderness, encounter modern-day ogres in the form of bullwhip-wielding maniacs and explore the evils of Las Vegas. Testing their friendship to the limit, they eventually find inspiration on a journey that exposes the stark truth about work and relationships and which asks the question - what do you really want to do with your life?

I loved this book! As an avid traveller myself, I laughed and guffawed at the situations Chris and Simon got themselves into. But they made it home in one piece with a great story to tell and thats what its all about. Anyone who loves travelling will love this book. I have never travelled in America but have now been inspired to take a trip to Vegas and maybe the rest of the golden triangle... which by the way boys - why did you not visit San Francisco? I feel like I know these two inside and out and will defintely be purchasing their next publication. My only criticism is that it was a bit short and I wanted to know more! These are real guys that you can relate to doing what we all want to do - stick two fingers up at the system, be free and have an awesome adventure!!

Being a fan of travel books that make you laugh, I was bought this book as a present.
Its very disappointing. The brothers obviously delude themselves into beliving they are funny - they arent. The dialogues recorded in the book just arent amusing or poignant.
Would recommend Peter Moore, Tony Hawks, Dave Gorman or Danny Wallace for real travel humour - this is a poor imitation!

ON THEIR WAY 7 April 2008

If this Simon Raven is related in any way to the more famous and notorious author of the same name he does not seem to be letting on. He and his twin brother Christopher (fraternal and we are told dissimilar in looks) were born in 1974. At least one of them lived in London for a while, but their place of birth is never identified more specifically than as `England'. Why they are being so secretive and mysterious I have no real idea. It may be in order to take advantage of the famous name, and I confess that was the sole reason why I bought the book myself.

As a first published story I'd say it is quite good. I do not call it a `novel' because it seems to be more of a glorified diary. The two youngsters pack in their jobs and set off for a first trip to America with a little money and a lot of youthful optimism. Nothing very new or surprising in this, but it ought to be said that their narrative talent and their writing ability show accomplishment already. If this really is their first effort at joint authorship then I'd guess they probably have what it takes to make a career out of that.

The story frankly does not amount to much. N other youngsters almost certainly had a more eventful trip in similar circumstances. However I see that the boys have produced one or more sequels. Prompted by the helpful name I have at least found out who they are, and I am impressed enough to give them another try sometime. Whether that should be sometime soon, or whether I should wait until they have a bit more to say, I have not yet made up my mind.
