Wonderful Insight Book!!! 16 Mar. 2008
By Hamza21 - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this book several years ago and I was quite impressed with it's style and the information contained in it. Whenever I encounter a new muslim I always strongly suggest to them to read this book as well as Even Angels Ask: A Journey to Islam in America and Tarikh al-madhahib al-fiqhiyah =: The evolution of fiqh : Islamic law & the madh-habs. The author explains concepts so clearly and concisely. She uses both Qur'aan and Hadith to illustrate her points.

The Table of Contents are as follows:

The Social Veiw of Islam
The Shariah
Halal and Haram
Human Rights
The Sanctity of Life
Women's Rights
Work and Wealth
The Duty to Give
Difficulties faced by Muslims living in Non-Muslim communities
Friendship and Unity
The Family
Marraige
Polygamy
Sex
Divorce
Alcohol,Drugs and Tobacco
Justice,Crime and Punishment
Green Islam
Animals
Jihad

The author touches upon each topic in straight forward way. Nothing is ambuigious, which sometimes some scholars writing can be when translated into the english lanuguage. She is britsh so she doesn't suffer from that quality. I believe western converts and born-muslims rasied in the west would appreciate her style of writing.

Until recently most books on Islam for muslims was mainly pubished by a company [dar us salam] with ultra strict Salafi leanings. This book is a more balanced traditional view of Islam and the realities of muslims faced with in living in the west.

For nonmuslims I can't say this book was designed for you but it can shed some much needed light on how muslims see themselves and their way of life. As which most books about islam seem to focus only politics and the middle east. This book for nonmuslims will definitely answer the question why many people are embracing Islam.

All in all a great book!
