5.0 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring, 8 Jun 2007

I have found this book to be very inspiring. It is also very hearwarming. It takes you through the diary of a family trying to be self sufficient and live sustainably. Well worth the read. It was light hearted interspersed with facts, recipes and practical advice. I haven't been able to put it down and it makes you realise what life could be like

4.0 out of 5 stars Living the Good Life - A Review, 4 Jul 2009
By sb - See all my reviews

The principles behind this book are sound, interesting, thought provoking and current. Its written in an easy to follow, emotive and passionate way. She describes her family's successes and failures during her six month project very well. For anyone who is interested in following the author's example of a more self reliant life, I would recommend this book as back ground reading.
However, for specifics about which veg she chose to home grow, the book isn't very helpful to readers in the UK as (rather sickeningly) the family in question lived in sub-tropical northern australia and were able to sustain an abundance of food which we could only dream about growing if we had a conservatory with central heating on all year round, and light provided by a nuclear reaction. Recipes containing 'tropical' fruits are all very well and good, but we would have to buy those ingredients from a supermarket which conflicts with the whole self-sufficiency do it yourself ethos.
All that said, it is still a worthwhile read for anyone with an interest in the general subject as the general principles are the same whether you live in the rainy UK, or are able to enjoy antipodean beach-side barbeques on Christmas Day .
