Product Description

Product Description

A study of drugs - the different kinds of drugs, the reasons why people take drugs, the ways in which people have used drugs, and some of the difficulties to which drug-taking can lead. The various hazards of use discussed include the physical and psychological health of users, the social penalties incurred by use of abuse, and the risk of dependence. In addition, the effects of drugs may be directly linked to the drug effect or indirectly related to behavioural patterns of use or to social consequences of use. The book is also about the ordinariness of drug taking. Where drugs are presented as though they were something alien and unusually dangerous, it tries to put drug-taking in a more balanced perspective, showing that even those who drink tea or coffee are drug takers. There are updated definitions of the main terms used within the fields of drugs and alcohol.

Format:Paperback
An easy to understand and structured guide to the effects - immediate and short term; physical and physcological - of drugs. Michael Gossop answers many questions and dispells even more myths that have evolved within and without the drug taking scene. He provides an educational light in the underground darkness, that for me at least is very welcome. Readers will find themselves addicted.

A penetrating study of drug use and social stigma 22 May 1999
By H-J.Wallin.Weihe@hil.no - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The famous British researcher Michael Gossop has written a peneatring and thought provoking book about drugs and the social and legal reaction to use of drugs.

The book is divided in 12 chapters covering a vide range of subjects. Living with drugs is, in the authors opionion, a book about how drug taking in one form another is with us to stay. Even if giving a social science analysis of the role of drugs in our societies, the author is also rather practical and down to earth in his description of different drugs and their effects.

The book is not updated on the newest research on new drugs, however it gives a good overview of the most common drugs used.

Myself responsible for educating social- and health workers I found it a most helpful introduction to the problems af drug use.
