The truth about office life,
By
This review is from: The Living Dead: Switched Off, Zoned Out - The Shocking Truth About Office Life (Paperback)
David Bolchover incisively debunks the myth of stress in the workplace by painting a picture of a world where office workers are routinely bored, demotivated, poorly managed and as a consequence do everything they can to avoid actually doing any work. Like Tom Hodgkinson's How to be Idle which actively encourages a shiftless existence, The Living Dead is a refreshing antidote to the glut of self-development and management books based on the premise that all employees must be fulfilling their life's destiny through their undervalued corporate existence. But unlike Hodgkinson, Bolchover does not think this is a good thing and has something to say about how the status quo can be improved. The book has the same hard-hitting, witty style as the author's new weekly column in Monday's Daily Telegraph business section. The ultimate message is the need to improve the quality of middle management. In fact to radically rethink the model that promotes purely on the basis of functional performance in favour of actively developing those who show a flair for managing people. This is a powerful message but it will be interesting to see whether business is ready to hear it.

So It's not just me then ...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Living Dead: Switched Off, Zoned Out - The Shocking Truth About Office Life (Paperback)
So it's not just me then, I thought, within reading the first few pages of this marvellous book. To those of us who are "living dead" in large, absurd, soul-destroying corporations, this book is right on the nail. It explains how such gross inefficiency can exist due to a conspiracy of vested interests, and why it is the last great taboo. But it also provides hope that things will change over time, and that large swathes of future generations will not have their minds numbed and their spirits destroyed in the same way. Well-written, funny, and eminently readable, this can't-put-down book should be compulsory reading for all so-called management of large organisations.

How to survive a deadly office,
By
This review is from: The Living Dead: Switched Off, Zoned Out - The Shocking Truth About Office Life (Paperback)
With wry British wit, David Bolchover skewers life in large corporations and exposes the extent of a phenomenon he calls "the living dead:" the masses of employees who are disengaged from their work, unproductive and unmotivated. Bolchover's account of his own experience of falling through the cracks of a corporate behemoth is hilarious. But far from being just an amusing caricature of life in big companies, his book is a thoughtful consideration of the economic costs of boredom and inefficiency. He suggests ways that companies - and national economies - need to evolve to address these problems. Corporate leaders interested in fully utilizing their human capital will find this book insightful. And, if you feel yourself slowly turning into a zombie in a business suit, Bolchover offers insight into how to breathe life into your career. We highly recommend this book to students of organizational behavior and anyone who has ever played computer solitaire at the office.
