Product Description

Synopsis

Many historical influences have contributed to the unique visual and cultural heritage of this Latin American republic. A semi-tropical country situated between the Caribbean and the Atlantic, this island has a history of strong Spanish ties. From the Spanish conquistadors of the fifteenth century to the influx of Spanish settlers who made the island their home, each has left a distinctive mark on the architecture and culture of Cuba, beautifully captured in Living In Cuba. Havana is like nowhere else in Latin America and a whole chapter is devoted to this remarkable city. Striking photographs capture the crumbling seventeenth-century buildings of Old Havana, hauntingly reminiscent of its Spanish colonial past. Grand, turn-of-the-century, now-faded rococo buildings stand alongside the remnants from revolutionary Cuba, while the waterfront offers pastel-coloured buildings and old stone fortresses facing the Straits of Florida. Interiors from many of the elegant hotels and from private homes add to the full flavour of the style of Havana.

Delightful Caribbean-style plazas, villas, period interiors, and the popular decor of public places in the provincial towns and villages complete the book's portrait of the island, evoking both its glorious past and its modern spirit.

capturing the essence .... 16 Dec 2000
By Matilde Busana - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book in Havana whilst on a brief visit just recently.

Having visited some of the places in the book, such as the wonderful building used as the cover shot; stayed in a hotel on The Malecon; stayed in one of the private grand old homes in Vedado; stayed for a few days in Trinidad; Cienfuegos; Valle de los Ingenios - can truly say that this book, by its wonderful photography, has captured the true essence of what is Cuba today - a beautiful island caught in a past era distinguished by its architecture, granduer of vision and the human senses of style and vibrant sense of life - all in glorious decay today but still captiviting and enthralling. It is heartening that some of the buildings are being restored to their former grandeur and will be there for following generations to see and enjoy.

The country is rendered even more attractive by its people, who everyday cope with trying to live without the basics that the rest of the world takes for granted and, still maintain a great sense of life, optimism, gentleness of spirit and pride in their beautiful country.
