Product Description

Product Description

"Living Buildings" celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Donald Insall Associates, the Practice founded by distinguished British architect Donald Insall, a leading exponent in the field of Architectural Conservation. Probably best known for the restoration of Windsor Castle after a devastating fire in 1992, the team's dedicated work has ensured the longevity of many of Britain's national treasures. This book presents a detailed examination of a painstaking approach to architectural conservation, comprehensively illustrated by case-studies, drawings, plans and in-depth descriptions. It is designed for a wide readership among all those who love and care for old buildings and appreciate good new design in sensitive areas.

With the current shift away from property as being a mere investment to something to inhabitat and enjoy there couldn't be a more relevant book.

Showing the development of conservation ideology and practise over 50 years this book contains a wealth of information for students of architecture and people who own or are interested in historic buildings.

This is more a celebration of this particular architectural practice than a practical reference. It's about principles and the way this architectural practice works, so don't expect to learn hands-on conservation techniques from the skilled tradesman's point of view. It's a huge book of 267 glossy pages with some stunning photographs, but I got through it in about one and a half hours and didn't lose anything in the skim-reading.

If you're thinking of establishing an architectural practice specialising in conservation work then it's worth a read (and it'll look good on the bookshelf beind your desk), but for anyone who spends their working day getting their hands dirty - forget it, Bernard Feilden's 'Conservation of Historic Buildings' will be a better investment at this level.

A fascinating read 12 Mar 2012
This is a fascinating read, the enthusiasm with which it is written after 50 years in architectural conservation, are a testament to its author and his practice. While not a "how to" on conservation and restoration the case studies accompanied by glossy and informative pictures mean that a wide range of people (myself included) without an architectural background gain a real feeling for the projects. I love looking at the places I have visited or local landmarks featured and would definitely recommend this book to others.
