The aim of this book is to provide you and your relatives and friends with a source of information about bipolar disorder that is accessible, clear, and reliable. Although frequently misunderstood, bipolar disorder is a common condition that affects about one in every one hundred people. It involves recurrent episodes of elevated and depressed mood that can pose a serious threat to physical health, careers, and relationships. By teaching you about bipolar disorder, this book aims to alleviate any feelings of fear and isolation that you may have, and provide you with a realistic sense of hope and optimism. Simple and practical advice about day-to-day management enables you to take greater control over the illness and make the most of the services that are available to you. Living with Bipolar Disorder shows how you can improve your chances of once again leading a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life.

From the Publisher

FOREWORD BY PROFESSOR NICK CRADDOCK

Coping effectively with bipolar disorder involves being honest and realistic, making sensible lifestyle changes, and working in partnership with health-care professionals. Knowledge of the illness and of its treatments is the foundation stone for all of these coping strategies.

Dr Neel Burton's book, Living with Bipolar Disorder, provides an excellent overview of the important topics. It explains what is currently known about the illness, its causes and triggers, the treatments available, and the lifestyle changes that can make a real difference. It is invaluable reading for anyone who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, for his or her family and friends, and for all those who want to find out more about the illness.

I have no doubt whatsoever that this book will be of tremendous help to all those who are Living with Bipolar Disorder.

I'm a consultant psychiatrist and came across this book a while ago. I thought it was very clearly written and easy to follow and have since recommended it to several of our patients, who have all found it very useful.

A good understanding of bipolar disorder and of its treatment can make a radical difference to a patient's outcome, perhaps more so than in any mental disorder. Amongst other things, this book teaches the patient to recognise signs of relapse, prevent sleeplessness (a major risk factor for relapse), and make the most of available treatments and services.

Highly recommended.

Though it was very imformative. It is believed that I may have Bipolar and it was interesting to me to read about the symptoms and all that goes with the condition. Yes, it is a very interesting book for both the afflicted and the carer.
