Livescribe 3 smartpens work with Livescribe Dot Paper to capture everything you write and draw.
How Smartpens Work

The Livescribe 3 smartpen is designed with the meticulous attention-to-detail that a premium writing instrument deserves. From the integrated stylus cap, down to the Swiss-made tungsten-carbide ballpoint ink cartridge, we've paid close attention to deliver an experience that is worthy of the title of your new favourite pen. But it is the amazing amount of technology packed inside the Livescribe 3 that really delivers the magic. The infrared camera in the tip of the pen captures your handwriting, storing it on the built-in memory. When it's paired to your tablet or smartphone, all your notes are synced to the Livescribe+ mobile app.

Smartpen, Smart Paper

Livescribe dot paper uses standard paper printed with a unique pattern of tiny microdots that work with the infrared camera in the Livescribe 3 smartpen to allow it to capture the exact location of everything you write or draw. Controls and tags that are printed on Livescribe notebooks help the smartpen communicate with the Livescribe+ mobile app. You can choose from a variety of paper types, bindings, and sizes at competitive prices: blank, lined, or grid paper in spiral-bound notebooks, hardbound journals, notepads, and even sticky notes.

Bluetooth Smart: Quicker Pairing, Longer Battery Life

Livescribe 3 smartpen uses Bluetooth Smart technology to pair with compatible mobile devices to support over 14 hours of continuous use between charges. Pairing is also made much easier – just turn on the Livescribe 3 and accept the pairing request on your mobile device with a single tap. After that, your smartpen will pair automatically each time you launch the app.

I have read all the reviews on here and wondered whether they were talking about the same pen!

Mine arrived and I took it out of the box, downloaded the app, and started using it. First I had to understand how it 'Bluetoothed'. Then how it recorded and married with the text. Found that if I did not go to setting/general/autolock and turn it off, when the lock cut in the recording cut off....but that was easily fixed.

I have had and still have one of the previous models. Like some of the others when I upgraded the firmware I lost the display and was out of warranty.

Perhaps these are slightly different pens to be used for different purposes. I have iPad and iPhones and I use both for different purposes. The ability to record voice with written text and convert to type is brilliant and works well for me. But the real benefit is to be able to record writing and voice and then be able to email to a non-livescribe user and they be able to listen and read exactly as if they had the device. Also I can save to Dropbox and move to another device is I need to and still have the full monty as though it was recorded on that device.

I love this new works for me!

I purchased the livescribe 3 on Dec 31 - for 3 months I used it and love it - great product. Then it stopped working.....would not synch to my iphone 5. No reason...nothing had changed.... I contacted livescribe......they were very helpful but could not get the pen to work - I was told to download livescribe helper and then do a master reset via the customer support tab - I never had that option - downloaded the livescribe helper app 3 times and the livescribe + app on my iphone 5 times - also on my kids ipads - no luck - has to be a fault with the pen...... Great concept and good luck if your pen works....if it doesn' frustration...I have given up as wasted hours on the phone and via live chat. Will revert back to basics.

I have used livescribe pens for a couple of years with great success.

The concept of this pen is great, unfortunately the software is awful and buggy -frequently crashing. Another thing to be aware is the pen is not compatible with livescribe desktop, so no more just plug in and transfer notes to PC, instead you are forced to email or use third party app such as one note or evernote. My advice would be to save yourself a shed full of cash and effort and get one of the older pens on ebay until they have sorted out all the problems.

Compared to the old Echo pen I've used for years for me it's a big step backwards. I use Onenote and this Pen just does not work with Onenote 2013. The Pen works with Evernote and Livescribe appear to be actively biased towards it. Visit Livescribe support for more info.

Taking the notes from the Apple into the Livescribe PDF is easy but used the Livescribe servers to read leaving me with a feeling of dependency for the future in Livescribe. Having to check the Ipad/iphone are connected and maintained in range is a faf. The upside is the annoying pen scratching as you write are gone with the use of the IPAD/Iphone as a Mic.

I'm back to using the Echo pen and would not have purchased the 3 with hindsight.

Works like it says on the tin! Pen a little more plastic than I would like but seems sturdy enough - app needs some work to make the whole ensemble truly great but workable as is - pads a little more expensive than I would like so looking at the printable versions.

As promised I have come back to update my original review. The product is now excellent, and I have been using it every day in meetings since version 1.0.6 of the app was updated on my iPad. The recording functionality now works, and it has not crashed.

I would now recommend the product without hesitation, and have updated my review from 2 to 5 stars.

Of course I would still like the automatic Evernote integration option, a desktop application and cloud sync between them all, but one step at a time !!

Thanks Livescribe.

Original Review below

I love my livescribe pens, let me say that first. This is my 3rd, however this product is not mature enough to be released to the market. I had to return one pen because the force sensing relay (i.e. the bit that detects that the pen is on the page) was stuck on, resulting in unintelligible scrawl. The replacement pen works well, but the app needs to be debugged. I have it paired with my iPad and my iPhone, and although it should deliver the written pages to both apps according to the documentation it is just random, and has now actually stopped delivering data to the iPhone.

Don't rely on it for Audio, as the app WILL crash if you attempt to record audio and write notes (the main reason for having the pen). I am currently back to my Wifi smart pen to record audio and text at the same time.

I was attracted to this pen to get the OCR, which actually does work well, but what I am disappointed in is the removal of close integration with Evernote which you now have to create a PDF and send it to Evernote rather than it just doing it. Howvere it does remove the niggle that I had with the Wifi pen which you cannot view easily offline.
