Livescribe Dot Paper

Livescribe dot paper uses regular paper printed with a unique pattern of tiny microdots. This tiny pattern works a lot like a GPS system for your smartpen. It allows a smartpen to capture everything it writes or draws on dot paper.

Livescribe smartpens only work with Livescribe Dot Paper, so we've created a variety of dot paper sizes and types: College-ruled Notebooks, Lined Journals, Blank Journals, Mini Journals, A5-sized Notebooks, Grid Notebooks, Flip Notepads, and Sticky Notes. You can even print your own dot paper for free from within Livescribe Desktop on many printers.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
It's a strange day when you find your pen needs a software update, but once you've tried Livescribe you don't go back.

When used with Livescribe paper, the pen syncs audio to your written word - go back and tap any word and the pen will play back the audio recorded at that exact moment. Priceless for when you can't read your own notes back, lost track of what was being said, or to hear the wider discussion at the time.

On the plus side:
The audio playback sync'd to written word is amazing. Absolutely spot on.
The audio recording is very clear (I tried it in meetings with 12 attendees) and it's easy to rewind/fast forward through the audio.
The pen looks like a normal pen, although a little chunky it's easy to write with.
The nib is `medium' but writes on the finer side.
Very easy to upload your written notes and audio to your PC or Google, Facebook etc. Just connect the pen via USB and your documents appear exactly as you wrote on paper.
The Livescribe paper and pen ink refills are reasonably priced here on Amazon.
You can download `apps' for the pen, the majority of which are free (Zork text adventure, anyone?)!

On the downside:
The pen comes with two caps. Both are tiny, require a strong thumbnail to remove and will probably be lost within a week.
The pen has a display that can't be turned off when recording audio, people know you're using a `weird' pen (up to you whether you admit it's recording!)
Doesn't come with handwriting recognition software to turn written text to type. This costs extra, but you only seem to get the price after you've accepted a 30 day `free' demo.

Firstly, I'm not sure why Amazon have me down as Barclaycard. I don't work for of endorse Barclaycard.

As with many of you reading this posting I've used a computer for many years and as like some of you I feel my writing skills faded away, so I looked to put this right! Some years ago if I were to attend a meeting I'd write notes then scan them as PDF's to save on my computer. The Livescribe pen seemed to give me his without the scanning. There are other pens out there that make a big shout that they don't need special paper, what they don't shout about is that you need a receiver for the pen so when you are out, pen, receiver and paper required. With Livescribe pen and special paper or notebook is all you need.
The pen works well, using the recording facility needs a bit of practice as you could just sit there, listen and have the pen recording, though when you get to review the event you'll have to listen from start to finish. Make notes, bullet points are fine and then you'll get the full benefit of the recording linking to the written content. This is when this pen comes into its own. Mind you if you'd prefer to just sit there, turn the pen to dictaphone mode, then listen to the recording later make notes from the recording and the recording is linked to the notes.

I use my Livescribe pen every working day and almost most of weekend days. I have 4 books I'm working from. This is also a new way of working, separate books for subject matter and events.

A couple of negative points.
I perfer to write with ink pen first, then gel, pencil and lastly ball point. A gel refil would be a good move for the pen I have.
The note books are a bit more costly compared to most, though they are good quality and well thought out.

An absolutely brilliant device. I often take notes for the production of minutes in meetings that may be three hours long and involve a dozen people. Using the pen and the dedicated A4 notebooks means that a scribbled note can be easily expanded into a full-blown discourse by playing the entire meeting along in real time through the computer speakers as you type up the minutes (using the Livescribe Desktop software supplied).
In the event of subsequent dispute you can quickly locate the section of the meeting concerned and play the entire discussion back. The microphone on the pen is surprisingly sensitive, clearly picking up speech from a distance suitable for all meetings although the quality of playback from the pen speaker is not brilliant (a decent set of desktop speakers gives very good reproduction).
Can't imagine life without it now.

I've had a Livescribe since July 2012, and I use it every day. I inherited a second Livescribe last year from someone who changed the way they worked (phablet with stylus and relevant apps), so I use this one when I'm out and about as it's better/safer than taking my main Livescribe Echo out with me and running the risk of leaving it somewhere or dropping it or whatever.

Although I'm a very highly committed digital person - my life is on my computers and in the digital world/cyberspace - but I'm also practical and there are some things which need to be written down, in handwriting. If, for example, I'm out and about and happenstance means that I meet up with someone and the conversation becomes intense and we go to a bar to continue it, it just doesn't work that I get out my ultraportable and start tapping away. So I use a notepad and my Livescribe Echo. Back home, the Echo uploads everything to my desktop and, when I need to search the information later and follow it up, the handwriting recognition app on the pen makes this possible (yes, the app cost an extra £14.99 - but what's that in real terms?).

At the start of every week I write down a ToDo list for the week, with the Livescribe. This works as a business diary (I'm self-employed), so I can search through the years for ideas and 'What happened?' and 'When did I...?' and so on.
