Product Description

Product Description

This eighth volume in the SEX LIVES series gives pen portraits of great artists who painted nudes, such as Picasso, Gauguin, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Goya, Dali and Degas. The author questions whether they were using the excuse of emulating the artists of the ancient world simply in order to persuade young men and women to take their clothes off.

From the Author

The newest books in my Sex Lives series have a list of all the
personalities that appear the books, so you can play "International Daisy
Chain". This is a game invented, not by me, but by Truman Capote. Pick any
two people from the list and see how many lovers you need to daisy chain
between them. The player who joins them with the least lovers wins. Play it
at home or in bed - or why not try a game of "Strip Daisy Chain"?

Sex and great artists 16 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Well, this book is as entertaining and easy to read as you could possibly want. The subject, sexlife and art, kind of invites fun and that is exactly what you get a sense of when reading this book. But it is also an eye opener to anyone who believes that the great artists of centuries past were just engaged in great thoughts about their art and on how to better themselves in artistic terms for recognition and fame. The book does focus mainly on the subject of the sexlives of the artists and perhaps you could level some criticism at the author for that but then the book does state that it is about the sexlives - not about the art as such. So don't expect in-depth discussions about artworks - that is not what the book is about. It should be mentioned though that the subject seems well researched.

A good read if you are interested in some light and informative entertainment on the sexlives of some of the greatest artists in history.

Interesting 19 Jan 2008
By S. Vanlammeren - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A very interesting book for budding artists, professional ones, or the people who just enjoy knowing about books.

Reading this book has made me think about certain paintings more, the paintings now have a story and make more sense. The one down side is that it is one story after another and many references to specific paintings or drawings.

This book is best read with some art reference book (or the internet) close by, and not all in one night. Enjoy the peculiar artists one at a time and explore their art with the new information about their sex lives in a cozy chair with a cup of hot chocolate handy.

A great read for everyone! 13 Feb 2000
By Michael J Woznicki - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Picasso, Gaugiun and Augustus John are but a few great artists with insatiable sex lives and but a few mentioned in Nigel Cawthorne's book Sex Lives of the Great Artists. Cawthorne brings to life the stories of the sexuality of the sex and other men in the world of art. From the opening page to end of the book Cawthorne is able to paint a picture of what separates these artists from so many others. You'll read about men like Renior, Van Gogh, Leonardo, Michelangelo to name a few. The book gives you a small, but powerful look at what made these men tick. You'll be captured by the exploits, from the Van Gogh ear story to Goya, Dali and Lautrec. Cawthorne has certainly done a great work of investigating men whose legend made not be everything you might expect. Price to fit just about every budget and making a great gift for just about anyone, Sex Lives of the Great Artists is certainly one to have in your personal library. Cawthorne's revealing insight will unquestionably turn more than one head with this book.
