Never before have the heroic deeds of Liverpool's band of brothers been told. For the first time this book brings together the untold stories of Liverpool Fire Brigade. Men and women who found their job so very ordinary but were, at times, called upon to undertake extraordinary tasks. From the start in 1836 Liverpool wanted a Fire Brigade which would rival any at home or abroad, being Great Britain s leading port after London, it faced new and differing challenges with every decade. Liverpool, choose to keep the Brigade as a Division of the Police Force until 1941, when after a year of air raids of unbelievable ferocity, it became No. 26 Fire Force, National Fire Service. After World War Two, it became a much scaled down version of its former self and took the title of Liverpool Fire Service later reverting to Liverpool Fire Brigade, until 1974 when it became Merseyside County Fire Brigade eventually in present day it is Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. For one hundred and fifty years men, women, children, not forgetting animals of every description, owe their lives to the daring exploits of this gallant band who whenever called were ready to risk life and limb to preserve life and property from the flames, many being injured and others making the supreme sacrifice. Painstakingly researched, it includes profiles and photographs of all the rescues and rescuers, it also includes those killed on duty. Explosions, riots, terrorism, air raids, plane crashes, fire engine crashes, and much more. A book of heroism that will fire the imagination.
About the Author
Gavin F. Bassie joined Merseyside Fire Brigade in 1987, as a member of Red Watch Queens Drive Fire Station, Old Swan, which received a Chief Officers Watch Commendation, for multiple rescues in Tollerton Road, 20th November 20, 1999. Seriously injured in a training accident in 2001, and medically retired in May 2002; later that year receiving the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal. It is more than a labour of love.
